Book said the family was given a copy of the parent handbook when they enrolled, which spells out as plain as day: "All boys hair must be a tapered cut, off the collar and ears. There are to be no dreads, Mohawks, designs, unnatural color, or unnatural designs."

Stanley said he'd never seen the book before Monday, on what was supposed to be C.J.'s first day of first grade. "Or else I'd have never put my son through this embarrassment," he said.

Oh, so the school is the one who ran to the press with the story? What a joke.

We had the same rule in every public school I attended in the 60's and 70's. Had a principal that cut my hair a couple of times.

Long hair is long hair regardless of color.

Episcopal high school in BR told a kid to shave his dreads 7 or 8 years ago. Wasn't a big deal then and I don't see why it is one now.

Any private school worth a shat is going to have the exact same rules.

Sounds like the family got a scholarship through the state and had no idea of the school’s principles and guidelines.

So their first reaction is naturally racism.

Funny how everyone in the school got a handbook except them.

Same at the private school I went to in Georgia. I guess the difference was the parents were simply concerned with our education, not screaming about equality then saying you'd rather have inequality when the child is treated just like everybody else.

Dreadlocks look ridiculous.
Kids need to learn what's appropriate at a young age.

Just like long hair on a boy. It's not appropriate.

At Brother Martin we got handed razors just for having sideburns too long.
Same thing at Catholic. Also, if you showed up with unshaven stubble on your face. No shaving cream, cold water, and razor burn for the next couple of days. But, it made you not want to show up unshaven again.
