Yep, the US has an epidemic of people running around looking like Brock Lesnar. We better slow down on the bodybuilding before we capsize the continent

So like 2% of the U.S. population.

When I think "average American", people with the build of Patrick Willis pop straight to mind.

And being that big isn't healthy either. All of those guys that are that big end up not being able to walk because of joint problems by the time they're 50 and all have to have a CPAP becuase they can't breathe when they sleep.

Very few people would be considered overweight based on BMI due to muscle mass.

I’m 6’1 209 and I’m considered fat even though I work out 5 days a week.

Being overweight is a risk factor for covid death.

I wouldn't worry about a 25 BMI - for a 5'10" person, there is about a 35 pound range between overweight and obese. Science really kicks in at a 30 BMI for all sorts of negative health outcomes.

But, frankly, for a lot of mortality causes, being slightly overweight is better than being slightly underweight and, in some narrow circumstances, it is better to be a little (and I mean like 25 up to 26.5 or 27, not approaching obesity) overweight than normal weight.

So, take all of your risk factors into consideration. Don't "ignore" BMI, but be reasonable with it. A very fit, muscular 5'10", 175 or perhaps large framed isn't a concern than that same 5'10" who is doughy with a big belly and that same 175 lbs.

At a certain point the weight is still dangerous because a 6'1", 245 pound bodybuilder's heart is still having to deal with that weight, the organ systems are all under strain, even if that excess weight is relatively "good" weight (i.e. muscle).

Especially as one ages.

Created by life insurance policies so they could charge more.

We had a company wide health assessment and I entered in my data before going to an in person review. Prior to the in person, my health rating was 90/100. After the in person meeting (with them only taking height, weight and BP numbers) my health rating dropped to 80/100 solely based on BMI. BP was perfect, too, and BF% was around 15%.

It certainly doesn't apply to the OT where everybody is built like a Greek God, but for the average person, it's a good enough approximation. I mean, they have fat mannekins in stores now.

5’10 175 at a 25 could be anywhere from a skinny fat guy with a pot belly to someone who lifts weights and is in fantastic physical shape with very low body fat.

I just got back from the Destin. The amount of land whales waddling around is ridiculous. And of course they have no shame.

I love mentioning extreme outliers when disputing something. Really makes sense.

BMI is good for most people. Guys who snort pre-workout and lift weights 5 times a week are not normal.

And most people who claim it's bullshite don't have the muscle-to-fat ratio to claim that is why they're considered overweight.

That's about one pound overweight on the scale. Does covid carry around a BMI chart in his pocket? I'm not sure the person you've invented for your straw man is in the high risk category.

Being fat is almost always a diet thing.

I exercise a good bit, but I also eat pasta and drink beer because I love it and I'm about your size. And I fully admit I am overweight.

This is true.

But if you look at all of the 5'10" 175 lb men in America, I bet 95% are "skinny fat guy" and not "fantastic physical shape".

Again, it's a good metric for most people. And most people who claim it isn't a good metric for them are full of shite.
