Neurology friend has told me the best thing you can do to help memory is to learn to play a musical instrument or learn a foreign language.
I taught myself to play guitar a few years ago (im in my 40s) becuase i love music and always wanted to be able to play an instrument - plus with the availability of free tutorials on Google and YouTube, it’s fairly easy .. i didnt realize it was good for my cognitive health, but that is defintiely an added bonus .
As for learning a new language- F that.. being from Louisiana , i cant speak for others on this board, but i was forced to start learning French in the 1st grade.. then took it in middle school, high school and even took a few semesters of French in college when i needed electives.. i am all ‘foreign languaged’ out.. worst part of it is i cant speak a lick of it today .

At 77 most of my memory lapses involve alcohol and Ambien. I like to read before going to sleep, but with just a very small dose of Ambien, the next day I get to read the 50 pages again like they were new. A little bit of Ambien is great for fixing restless legs.
Ambien is bad news.. i had to quit taking it a couple years ago b/c i was having some serious memory lapses.. like, noticeable to other people type lapses in short term memory .. im only in my 40s, so it was very alarming to put it mildly.. i was not ‘addicted’, since when i didnt take an Ambien i would not have physical withdrawals- i just couldnt sleep without it.. so i guess the term is that i was dependent on it.. sometimes i got a fantastic night’s sleep with Ambien, other times i had a rebound effect that made me feel even worse the next day.. now, i take a mixture of herbal and OTC meds on various nights, and works as well or better for me than the Ambien did .

I had a damn near photographic memory in my 20’s and 30’s. I caught Covid in ‘22 and for 4 months I couldn’t remember anything. Now I can remember some things but I’m not at 100%.
I’ve had Alzheimers rampant in my family so I figure I’m getting that crap.
Years ago, I remember some study suggesting that aluminum causes it. If that’s the case, I’m even more screwed.
I can’t sleep but I try to drink more water and get some cardio in. It’s not helping at all though.

When did you start worrying about your mental sharpness and memory.
I am 58, I started having very minor brain farts about two years ago. Maybe I just notice it more. Noticed physical downfalls lately such as balance, sight, hearing. My father is 94 and is sharp as a tack. He does get long winded sometimes on his storytelling.

Yep. It happens.
Exercise, cut back on booze, and eat healthier. It really does work.
Also, dial into things you need to handle. You stay on your game and it’ll go a long way.

Cardio, weights, deep sleep, ketosis above >4, TRE 16/8, Omega 3's in phospholipid form (SMASH), morning sunlight, sauna, cold thermo and water.

Drink Fiji water. It has high levels of silica in it which absorbs aluminum and allows you to pee it out. It is also lower in deuterium which is better for mitochondrial health.

Yes. A friend told me to take lion’s mane mushroom and another. And warned me about Dectyl that’s in a lot of stuff and it is horrible for the brain (microwave popcorn has it, and the dangers of “natural flavoring” if one doesn’t check to see what that natural flavoring. Hell, Kerry Gold butter had a cancer causing agent in its wrapper and had to recall. Now I look for that, and had cut out HFCS a long time ago.

Aluminum is on the list of horrible things for our brain. We have a friend who’s been tired and not right since Covid. Who knows what it can really do to some people. Maybe do some puzzles, etc. And see my post above re bad stuff for us.

Loss of short term memory in old age is a gift from God so that we can forget that our bodies are broken in almost every aspect, but we still enjoy great long term memory in order to reminisce when they fully worked.

Actually, have a friend that does research on this and what I’ve picked up is reduce carbs, more Omega 3’s , and regular periods of fasting. Seems like we are designed to benefit from fasting. Our evolutionary response to hunger seems to increase mental acuity, and processing speed, I guess to make us better Hunter/gatherers to survive. We eat too much and too regular, now, which is why Dementia ( Type 3 Diabetes) is on the rise. Our systems need stress, a reactionary process to make the cells adapt, create stronger and numerous mitochondria. So fasting, eating right, and exercise; like most people have said…
