I have tickets to “Croce Plays Croce” next month with his son doing the performance.

Agree with this. He put out so many greats in such a short period of time and all of them are timeless songs.

Pop singer-songwriter Jim Croce, 30, was killed September 20th when the single-engine plane in which he and five others were riding hit a tree on takeoff.

The crazy part is that it was a lone tree at the end of the runway. There wasn’t another tree within a hundred yards of it.

I used to live off of Fairgrounds Rd next to the airport while I attended NSU about 20 years ago and I wasn't aware of this until a few years ago while reading this board. Does anyone know where the tree is located?

The tree was cut down not long after his crash.

His wife ran a restaurant in San Diego for many years.

Lazy days in mid-July
Country Sunday mornin'
Dusty haze on summer highways
Sweet magnolia callin'

But now and then I find myself thinkin' of the days
When we were walkin' in the Alabama rain

Of all the musicians that died young, I'm not sure any would have likely made the cultural impact that Croce was poised to make. He essentially had three releases that hit in a year and a half and he was gone. In that group of songs was:

You Don't Mess Around with Jim
New York's Not My Home
Photographs and Memories
Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)
Time in a Bottle
Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)
One Less Set of Footsteps
Roller Derby Queen
Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
I Got a Name
Lover's Cross
Workin' at the Car Wash Blues
I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song

Imagine Croce's writing and playing as he matured even more?

We missed out on a ton when we lost Croce.

Next Time, This Time is my favorite of his and I don’t think many people even know it exists

Yep. It’s a shame no one had to foresight to not remove a damn pecan tree at the end of a run way.

Must have been pretty neat to be alive the same time he was alive.

I remember hearing the news on the radio while getting ready for school and feeling gut punched.

What I imagined losing Buddy Holly felt like.

His songwriting to me is only surpassed by Hank Williams.
Hank amassed all those great songs and was only 29 when he died. Croce was just 30, and both were pretty tired of the grind and pressures of the music machine industry.

Croce and his crew got tipped off that the Natchitoches police wanted to bust him for weed so they called up the pilot who was still at the motel. The pilot ran all the way down highway 1 to the airport and had a heart attack during takeoff.

I’m going to ask my friend about this. He actually had to iD the body that night as he was one of the last people to talk to him.

Article says September 20th but I've also seen it as the 19th. Apparentlyit was late at night, either just before or after 12.

if the 19th that would mean Croce & Gram Parsons died on the same day

I heard the same thing from the doctor who
was the coroner in Natchitoches Parish at the time, during a continuing education class on trauma. Autopsy photos and all. Not a mark on him externally. Love his music. I Got A Name is my favorite.

Two professional wrestlers took their ring names from that song...

Sylvester Ritter - Junkyard Dog

Roland C. Daniels - Bad Leroy Brown
