This isn't new. PSLF has been a program for quite some time. It wasn't until the last few years that some of the first enrollees would be eligible for the forgiveness.

With that said, they certainly have recently expanded the rules and policies to include certain types of federal loans that were disbursed prior to the establishment of the PSLF program, so people who weren't previously qualified for the PSLF program can now apply and have their loans forgiven/debt canceled assuming they met the other criteria. This is what that 3rd paragraph alludes to.

Been reading some reports of some physicians(working for hospitals that are non profit) having their loans retroactively forgiven based on the new rules.

They can, and I am.

The program began as a way for the public sector to attract talent in other ways that the private sector can't or generally doesn't. What the private sector offers in salary, the public sector makes up with in leave, health benefits, loan forgiveness, etc.

Yeah and it forgives loans for people like teachers. Personally I think it’s a good program

Debts aren't erased. They are always paid.

Either by the debtor or the creditor. What people don't realize is that the Fed took over student loan business and is the creditor. Where does the Fed get its money? You guessed it.

We the taxpayers will be paying off the worthless degrees of our neighbors

As noted, the program has existed for many years already. But 98-99% of applicants were denied.

They should waive mine as a reward for my hard work getting to the point where I can afford to pay my loans back. But they won’t. I did too well.

Didn’t someone do an analysis of this program and found out 1% of applicants actually have their student debt relieved?

Eta:

The approval rate is low. Among all 1,084,792 combined applications for PSLF and TEPSLF submitted since November 9, 2020, only 14,566 (11,100 for PSLF and 3,466 for TEPSLF) have been deemed eligible for forgiveness, according to February 2022 data from the Department of Education. That means only 1.34% of all applications have been approved. However, 691,794 of those applications were confirmed as on track toward discharge.

Don't you just love the govt and their euphemisms?

"Income-driven repayment (IDR)" means that if you're too poor to pay back your loan because you have a worthless Gender Studies degree, you pay a percentage of what you owe and the rest of loan will be paid back by the taxpayers

Another one is employers. Employers requiring degrees when they could simply train the employees on the job. Employers need to do a better job of informing young people they do not have to continue on to college straight out of high school. Instead, they use college as a mechanism to weed out lower skilled applicants, thus perpetuating the lie that everyone should go to college.

The biggest issue is ease of access to loans and no regulation on professor salaries or tuition. We need auditors to actually look at each educational institution that raises tuition if they receive federal funding and see the need, how money was previously spent and where new money will be spent. Only once they pass an audit should they be allowed to request tuition increases if they are receiving government funding.

The company/department over this program actively tried to screw people out of payments that would qualify. Change the price by a few pennies, move the date around, wait to process on time payments, etc.

As someone said it was developed as a way to drive people into public service, and then the government didn’t fulfill their side of the partnership.

Then starting to fulfill the the forgiveness is the right thing to do.

The OT:

Cops should be paid more, cops should have to have some sort of law degree, etc. Etc.

Govt:
Hey cops we cant pay you more, but we can make some of you college debt go away.

The OT:

frick. These. People.

Its already been said, they just modified a program already in existence because the requirements were stupid and didn't make any sense.

**Disclaimer**

I am not benefitting from this program.

It's because when these people bitching hear "government employee" the only thing those words mean to them is a stereotype of the rude and/or lazy DMV or postal worker. Not painting with a broad brush requires a bit of objectivity.
