The correct verdict. Technically. That said, that dude was possibly the only fricktard on Earth that could have elevated what should have been a normal human interaction to another guy bleeding out on the grass. He's defective. If it was you or me there would have been a polite exchange, and two people would have smiled and walked on.

Think that sums it up pretty well. I think it's likely he initiated the confrontation and freaked when the tall skinny kid got the better of him. But the evidence in a criminal case did not warrant conviction, IMO.
Believing something, even knowing something and being able to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt are completely different things.
