A four year old can fully understand what a gun is and never to touch one because it can kill you. A simple demonstration and they will never forget.

My old man took me out in the country one day. Pulls out a handgun and shows me what it does. I remember it well, and it was like 35 years ago.

safes are great, but can you use the gun if you need it instantly?

if I need it instantly, it's in my holster. If I can't have it on me, like to run in and pick my daughter up at daycare, it's in the locked truck safe. Then back in my concealed holster as soon as I'm back. I don't put my guns down without them being locked up. I have a quick access safe in the bedroom and coat closet. I have a 3 and 9 year old. Just not worth the risk.

As you SHOULD if you actually CARRY it. Why didn't dad have his firearm holstered on his person? This is what I don't understand. "Secured" area is unnecessary if you have your carry weapon on you. Unless it was a rifle, which the article didn't mention

By the time I was 4 I knew damn well what a gun was. You never messed with dad's guns or his tools.

Is it that hard to not have one chambered when you’re not around the weapon? So sad.

Grown men don’t think this way.

They may know it’s something to never be touched and that it can hurt you, but most 4 year olds have no concept of the permanence of death. My 4 year old told me today that he wanted to die so he could visit Pawpaw in heaven. A completely innocent, clueless, heartbreaking statement.

4 year olds do not have fully developed brains. It’s a huge fricking ask to trust them not to put themselves in harm’s way when they have very little impulse control and no concept of death.

That's stupid, just like down range you should carry based on threat. If in a high threat area, yeah locked and loaded, you're in a low threat area (which is likely 99.99% of the time), unloaded. Even better, mag out.

That's just plain stupid, especially for those that actually carry a gun for self-defense on a daily basis. Let me know when threats start making appointments like they seem to do in your dim little world...

Dad will kill himself tonight if he has a shred of decency. I sure would.

Do it.

My heart actually aches at the thought of it.

And my little guy is being a holy terror at the moment.

I thought it made obvious sense. If you're driving down the interstate, no need to keep one in the chamber. If you catch a blowout or breakdown, of course load it.

You always keep it loaded. 1000% of the time it needs to be loaded.

There are tons of safe options to keep it away from kids. The last thing you want to do is be racking a slide if you need it.

It’s not about living this way it’s about knowing how to use a firearm and securing them.

Hot stove, don't touch!

Same with handguns. Kids learn quickly, at a very young age, If you carry, it is necessary to teach your children, no matter how young they are, gun safety.
