NEW ORLEANS — Four Sixth District NOPD officers have been fired and two more suspended in connection with the deadly crash into the Unity-1 Salon in Broadmoor back in March.
The crash took the lives of two teenagers, 14-year-old Chimelu Collins and 16-year-old Byron Wilson Jr., who were inside the vehicle, and of 54-year-old Schwann Herbert, who was in the salon.
Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said that the officers involved in the fatal pursuit violated the department's policies by engaging in a pursuit without prior authorization and by not engaging their respective body cameras until after the crash. In fact, Ferguson said the officers turned the cameras off.
The four officers fired, Alex Mikkelsen, Jonathan Broom, Jeffrey Herrington and Alex Florian, had a combined 11 years of service.
Two other officers, Colby Stewart and William Hery, were suspended. Stewart is suspended for 44 days and Hery is suspended for 54 days.
"This is a painful reminder of why (certain protocols) remain in place," Ferguson said.
"What happened that night was a tragedy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell in a statement. "All actions have consequences. Those individuals responsible are being held accountable."
An investigation into the crash was launched to find out if officers broke department policy by pursuing the car that eventually crashed into the salon.
Ferguson said that in addition to the fatal Unity-1 crash, investigators began looking into reports of other unauthorized pursuits in the same district in a three-week period prior to that crash.
Ferguson said at the time that officers attempted to pull over what they believed was a stolen car at the corner of Toledano and Derbigny Street. The vehicle did not stop when police deployed their lights and instead sped up.
Initially, Ferguson said that the officers did not pursue the vehicle, but the officers were later put on desk duty while an investigation into the crash and possible chase was being conducted.
Ferguson said Wednesday that in an effort at transparency he relayed the information he was given at the time.
"We were told that the officers disengaged," he said. "We soon learned that was not the case."
NOPD has a restrictive pursuit policy in the department’s operations manual.
The policy covers 14 pages, but the most important elements are covered up front: Vehicle pursuits are prohibited unless the suspect has been involved in a violent crime and a suspect’s escape poses a danger.
The policy is based on safety and meant to prevent crashes like this one.

I’m more curious about the body cameras being off for whatever reason than the chase.

They were Damned if they do and Damned if they dont .... If they wouldn't have chased the car and something happen ... they would have found cause to fire them for that ... Police today are being systematically taken out in so many ways .... There might be more to this then then the article but seems like every day you see a story about Cops being fired for just doing their Job

I hadn’t seen that part about the body cameras mentioned until now. That’s interesting.

Umm, no.
Vehifle pursuit policies are in place because they're often a large risk to the public. They were fired for NOT doing their job correctly. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah it isn't normal for folks to get fired for breaking job rules. never happens to civilians so it shouldn't happen to the boys in blue.
They should face some criminal charges as well IMO. If the folks they were pursuing were alive they should be facing murder charges.

I am on board with the firings and suspensions but the Mayor and Police Chiefs statements make me want to puke. Placing 100% of the blame on the officers is ridiculous. Let’s not forget that the two dead people stole a car and ran from the police. THAT is the reason this happened. Not because the police chased them.

What a tragedy. 3 people died for no reason and the "punishment" is losing a job.

What's up, Mr Chambers?

They turned their body cameras and dash cams off. They knew they were breaking department rules and they turned cameras off to hide it.

The chase had nothing to do with the accident? BS.
Of course if they don't steal the car, none of this happens, but to act like the chase was irrelevant is horseshite.

Perhaps, if the shite heads the cops were pursuing decided that day not to commit grand theft auto and flee, they would still be alive today.

Seems kind of pointless to have body cams if the officer can turn them off whenever he pleases

NOPD is one of the most corrupt groups in the state and that’s saying a lot.

Right. To me, turning off the cameras, by itself, is a fireable offense. To say nothing of the unauthorized chases. Also, they apparently told the investigators they cut off the chase and only happened upon the fire after the accident occurred.
I don't like the no-chase policy because I believe it tells criminals that it's ok to run.
I also don't like how the superintendent apologized to the families of the criminals. If they don't run, the crash doesn't happen, either. They are just as much at fault, and really more so, for the accident, than the chasing officers were.

Have you seen what they pay officers? It's mighty tempting to supplement your $30K salary with cold hard cash

1 person died for no reason, 2 died for stealing and fleeing.

Which was probably a lie based off the new information.

This is a tough call. I get the reasons behind the rules though. But it’s tough to “blame” the officers for the deaths.
If an arsonist starts a fire, should firefighters just not try and put it out? Assuming no risk to lives? If a firefighter gets killed fighting the fire, is it the ladder chief’s fault?
Those two dead little bastards need to be charged with the death of the person in the salon, the officers shouldn’t be blamed for that.
Grounds for firing IMO.
