On March 3, 1991, the brutal police beating of a Black man named Rodney King who was chased by police over a traffic violation was captured on camera. Then, two weeks later, a 15-year-old Black teenager named Latasha Harlins was shot to death by a Korean American store clerk. She claimed that the girl was trying to steal a bottle of orange juice.

At about 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, the jury released their verdict: All four officers were acquitted of charges in the King case, save for a mistrial on one charge against Powell of excessive force.
quote:
The response was immediate, as protesters took to the streets. Hundreds of people gathered at the Los Angeles County Courthouse to protest the verdict. By 5:30 p.m., the unrest had grown violent near the intersection of Florence and Normandie Avenues in South L.A., where locals attacked passing motorists and forced overwhelmed LAPD officers to retreat.
A news helicopter captured footage of white truck driver Reginald Denny being pulled from his rig and beaten nearly to death, with no signs of police assistance. Minutes later, a Latino driver named Fidel Lopez endured a similar attack.
quote:
The final tally for the L.A. riots included 2,000 injuries, 12,000 arrests and 63 deaths attributed to the uprising. Upwards of 3,000 buildings were burned or destroyed and 3,000 businesses were affected as part of the $1 billion in damages sustained by the city, leaving an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 people out of work.
Also, the day the world learned don't f*ck with Koreans

Beware the trees speaking Vietnamese and the rooftops speaking Korean

I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford
With red lights flashin', time to retire
And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire
I lived in Irvine during the riots. Removed from it all but I didn’t realize the extent. What a wild time.

frick Rodney King, he was a piece of shite.
And frick L.A. for allowing this to take place. Should’ve shipped the Marines up from Pendleton to kill the rioters.

These were awful events. This is why people who get online or on tv and say race relations are worse today than ever before in history need to be not only ignored but called out. We have come so far. It's never going to be perfect, but every generation gets better.

Right, but race relations were much better 15-20 years ago. In fact, I would say those years were peak racial harmony.

I remember watching the riots live and seeing that go down.
Strange that I can't find the original video any longer.

This was about the time LA realized criminals were more important to their structure than law abiding citizens.

There were some pistols, an O/U, a bolt gun, but this appears to be an Armalite AR-18/AR-180.

Same here. I remember having to write a paper on the riots in middle school.

I just watched a clip of it on youtube, or at least the clip of Denny getting hit in the head with the brick..

And then a black lady on the OJ jury admitted years ago that they acquitted OJ to get revenge for Rodney King.

I could find news reels about it with just snippets of the original video.
The original video, they smacked him with the brick, then about 5 guys danced around him while throwing gang signs and taking turns beating on him more.
