I have a few clients that worked for NASA at the time. They were who let me know several years after it happened that they had radio contact for about 30 seconds after the explosion. Hush Hush around Houston since so many people knew those who died.

I thought NASA cut comms right after the explosion and the crew were all alive until the shuttle crashed?

I was teaching 4th grade at the time. We always watched the space shuttle blast offs, but didn’t that day. My principal came down and told me. Remember like yesterday.

Alive but unconscious is the most likely scenario, assuming the crew cabin depressurized when the shuttle broke up. Hard to believe it remained pressurized, but if it did they could have been alive and conscious all the way down.

I hope this is the case. If not, how terrible must that have been?

Somehow I remember this. I was in first grade and someone walked into our classroom and told our teacher. She started crying and had to walk out. Years later we found out that she personally knew the teach onboard.

First grade classroom watching the launch. My family and I had seen Atlantis launch in person two months prior, so I knew something was FUBAR straight away. The teacher did too, but I think it took a few minutes for everything to sink in.

From what I’ve read, the crew cabin remained intact until it impacted the sea. Hopefully all were unconscious and unaware, but when the cabin remains were recovered at least two of the emergency oxygen tanks had been activated.

I was at Southeastern, and obviously the start of the spring semester. I just got back from class and was watching, and as usual, I fell asleep like I did between all of my classes. My roommate came in, woke me up and told me about it. I was like bull shite, I was just watching it, then realized I fell asleep with it on...

I was in Tiger Plaza , channel surfing between the launch and Mr. Mister and Tears for Fears videos on MTV. It was a channel that played music videos. We all watched it unfold in horror. Then we went to Rally’s for a burger and ended the day at Murphy’s drinking quarter beer .

That's strange. We didn't ever watch blast offs but did that day just because there was a teacher going into space for the first time ever.

More like the breakup of the vehicle would have zapped out all electrical power, which would've killed the radios.
