$32K max from FEMA but the average is $7500 paid out?

That seems way off to offer up to $32K but claims only average $7500.

I guess SBA loans will be the only way some people can get back on their feet.

n addition to, or in the absence of private insurance, the FEMA will provide up to $32,000 as a one-time disbursement for affected homeowners who qualify. To apply, go to disasterassistance.gov. The application takes up to 20 minutes to complete.
"If they lived in a flood zone and that home has never received flood insurance they can also receive one-time assistance," said Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards at a press conference Tuesday.
In past flooding events in the state, the average check amount was $7,500, he noted.

that only says for in a flood zone.
if you are in a floodzone and don't have insurance you shouldn't get squat.
i thought this was for people out of the flood zone.

You're misreading that. The flood zone he is referring to is all of the Parishes that are currently flooded and determined to be a disaster area, dummy.
If your house has never flooded before this disaster, and you didn't have insurance, you will qualify.

Agreed. People in a flood zone who were recommended to obtain flood insurance should be given funds last, if at all. The government rewards a lack of personal responsibility far too often

Man that is depressing to read.

explain to me why you wouldn't have insurance if you are in a flood zone. should be mandatory.
Im not talking about people that weren't in a flood zone. they should get assistance.

You can't have a mortgage in a flood zone without flood insurance. It just doesn't happen. What you two are worried about (people in flood zones without the insurance) will be a handful of the overall houses that are flooded and that's only going to be people with zero mortgage.

Why? What's wrong with this statement? If you own a car and don't have insurance, should the government replace your car if you get in a wreck?
If you're going to be anti-big government and call out welfare queens, don't be the first to line up for your FEMA money.

You think these people that keep posting that crap have family affected without insurance and tell them "well....should of had flood insurance" when they are talking to their crying, stressed out family members over the phone?

If you live in Baton Rouge or surrounding area... and you live in a floodzone, why wouldn't you get flood insurance?

This is why I made my brother only remove what he needed to mitigate damage. Cabinets got a little water and had minor swelling at the bottom, but I think we can fix that if we have to. Once he figures out what kind of money he is going to have to work with between FEMA and loans, we can always rip out more.

The amount received will be proportionate to the amount needed (not commenting on whose decision it is to say what's needed). People who had a few inches of water will need a lot less than people who had 6 - 10 feet of water. So if the system is just, one could say that it may be a good sign that claims are averaging that low.
ETA: They aren't going to automatically hand out $32k to everyone that got water in their homes. If they are screwing people, then I digress..

I'm all for the flood victims getting assistance, but it will be interesting to see if opinions change on other forms of public assistance

A little different, though. Flood zones changed and the potential of flooding isn't nearly the same as getting into a wreck. Bad comparison.

This is such a stupid statement. There's a difference in paying people to have more kids, not work, and being a drain on society vs helping working class people in a time of need.
If you can't see that then you are a moron.

I get what you are saying but the average would be higher if they were handing out the max money to those that need it. That number also means some people are getting less than a few thousand bucks. You know how far a few K goes even with a few inches in a house? Not far at all.

I dont think it will nor should it really. Freak Natural disaster like this in areas that have not flooded in over 100 years is a whole lot different than other forms of govt assistance.

insurance makes whole, government assistance is just that, assistance.
