I'm gonna go with the PhD economists and say we shouldn't go back to work right now..

Our paramount concern at this moment should be to slow the spread of this virus and equip our health care system to effectively respond. Saving lives and saving the economy are not in conflict right now; we will hasten the return to robust economic activity by taking steps to stem the spread of the virus and save lives.
quote:
Public and private sector actors must work together to provide more tests, more ventilators, more personal protective equipment, and more support for hospitals and health care facilities. Only when we have made progress on these fronts will US businesses and consumers be able to resume normal economic activity without inducing a resurgent spread that leads to even more severe health and economic effects.
quote:
While Americans practice social distancing and medical professionals work to save lives, policy makers should put measures in place to support households and businesses through this difficult period. These collective efforts will allow more businesses to get up and running again as soon as possible and minimize the severity of the economic hardship on the American people.

We are deeply troubled by the prospect of a sustained recession that would erode the economic livelihood of millions of Americans.
They haven't seen the unemployment numbers yet.

Well then it's time to ramp it the frick up like we did during WWII when we were spitting out war machines and supplies like it was nothing. I'm ready to get my damn life back. Sign me up for the factories so I can help if I have to.

No they care about bringing the stock market back up so their retirement is bigger and don’t have to live off the government tit in retirement

Do you have a substantive criticism of it?

The market will come back because the fundamentals of the economy have been and will continue to be strong. But it will probably take a while for things to come back online, especially small businesses. It probably won't happen on the timeline the GOP so desperately needs right now.

In other words, people's retirement savings will be fine in the long run. If you need the money in the next year or two, that really sucks.

Solid argument.

Conservatives only care about bringing the stock market back so Trump will win the election. They are also anti-intellectual, so PhDs and expertise don't impress them. They only care about winning and this will not persuade them otherwise.
47.5% of this countries workforce are employed by small businesses getting hammered by this shutdown. Tell me, how many of those small businesses are publicly traded?

You might get some substantive criticism if you had actually posted a substantive argument.
"Stupid Trumpkins" is not an argument.

It's cool. Millenials will pay for it.

Yeah we are super fricked. We are about to make Bernie’s wet dream look like the underwear section in a Sear’s catalog

Yeah the problem is you're thinking a couple of months temporary.
Due to the ripple effects, businesses are going to shut down and it will take years for them to reopen. These numbers are not going away soon.

We all know it's a balancing act
I don't understand the urge to plant firmly and inflexibly on one side or the other, aside from it being our national tradition to do so
