I was on the bullet train in 2005, looking out the window when another bullet train passed us going the opposite direction. It was gone before I could flinch.

"Their way of thinking has some merit" (and we're talking about Japan, here) receives an accusation of being a prog.
What a mental pussy.

Distance between major population centers. Japan has hugely concentrated populations. The train actually has time to accelerate to its max speed between them. The distance from San Antonio to Austin is barely enough to accelerate then decelerate to a much lower top speed. Same for Austin to Waco, and no, you won't get away with bypassing Waco. Too many influential Baylor alums. Then do you stop on the S side of DFW and the N side? Or do you split and go East and West? How many g's are you going to pull for acceleration? I've been on the Shinkansen many times, and it pulls just enough to keep you in your seat initially, then is very slow accelerating from there on. I could see all the San Antonio mayo tankers and screaming kids loading up for a 3g pull to Austin now....
You could have just skipped this point if you would have looked at Frances TGV. It stops at the airport and at Disney Land Paris. Takes you an hour in a car or 10 minutes on the train. So it is doable.

Giant waste of money in the United States

I dont trust anyone to keep it safe or to derail from some idiot stopping on the tracks. Look at Brightline in Florida as an example.
Exactly, JimBob in his ’87 Custom Deluxe going around the drop gates and causing 90 deaths and his own nullifies the usefulness of something like this. It would have to be elevated and out of reach of public interference to work, and there just isn’t feasibility for the cost until we reach a much higher population, especially along the Gulf Coast.

And yet California can only build 1 mile with billions of tax payer dollars.

I've ridden the Shinkansen (Bullet train) in Japan. It gets up to about 200 mph. When it passes another going the opposite direction, you can feel a shock wave.

Mr. Einstein, now do a monorail. Springfield needs a monorail!
Nothing but magnets and the little snot nosed rugrats would think you’re going to Disney.
