Look up on Google Maps where they took off from, where they wanted to go and where the ended up.
The original destination island is about 26 mile NE of where they took off from. Where they landed is about 100 mile NW. And there really isn’t anything between where they ended up and the Philippines. That’s like 2200 miles away.
They got extremely lucky.

The island they left from is 7sq km and only has 1000 people on it. I’m pretty sure they barely have electricity much less any high tech emergency gear.

Were they locals? The article said Australian and US aircraft were searching for them. No idea how common that is, though.

Google on top of it. When you look up Pikelot Island, the picture that pops up already is that of the shelter and SOS. Impressive!

I’m not sure. But looking at Google Maps, they’d have to be. That’s not even an island they left from. It’s a tiny atoll out in the middle of the Ocean with not much around it at all. You’d have to take a seaplane or long boat trip to even get to it. I doubt many foreigners ever go there.

Yea I have a 1. I like the look but I am fricked if I am ever stranded on an island. I am not a fan of the new ones.

What?
121.5 is still used by SAR and all aircraft are required to monitor it, just no satellite support which the watch was never strong enough to reach anyway.
Even the latest gen equipment still uses 121.5 for homing.
