Quarter of a million Americans die every year after being misdiagnosed in ER, federal study warns

quote:

A quarter of a million Americans die every year because they are misdiagnosed in the emergency room by bungling doctors, a federal report warns.

It found lives are being lost because medics do not know how to recognize some of the lesser-known symptoms of deadly complications like strokes and heart attacks.

For example, a stroke patient who goes to the hospital with dizziness has a 14-fold increased risk of being misdiagnosed compared to more common signs like numbness and speech problems.

Overall, the report estimated that 7.4 million Americans are mistakenly diagnosed during the 130 million yearly trips made to hospital ERs - the equivalent of around 6 percent. Roughly 370,000 patients suffer serious harm as a result.

Just to think, we have a large number of people who want to remove the standards to get accepted into medical school.

Doesn't surprise me. I got a $110k medivac ride because the ER doctor couldn't read a MRI.

As someone who works in Healthcare and in close contact with ERs, I don't disagree with this. ER doctors are often overworked and understaffed. Instead of being able to focus on critical care patients, physicians are often bombarded with colds, STD checks and other illness that a PCP or Urgent Care could better handle.

If you are a lawyer that wants to make money, medical malpractice is a slam dunk route.

Maybe quit treating our ERs as primary care and the docs can focus on the more serious cases.

Emergency medicine is an extremely risky specialty. As an EM physician you are encountering a patient for the first time ever and only have time to spend ~10 minutes in the room. Plus the increase in PA/NPs in ERs is extremely troubling. Midlevels overrunning EM is leading to further mismanagement of resources

To be fair…. The ER is a first line triage that deals with all varying types of emergencies.. someone presenting with a headache isn’t immediately going to be seen or diagnosed by Gregory House as having a stroke..

Doesn’t excuse failures but it’s easy to overlook the totality of what’s happening in an ER when looking back at preventable deaths

Now, add malpractice and gross negligence to that number.
