BATON ROUGE - Twenty-four students at Lee Magnet High School won't return to the sought-after school in 2020 after school officials became aware of videos showing boxing matches in bathrooms.
"Back in late August, September, me and my friends were sitting around talking and someone said they had [boxing] gloves," student Thomas London Jr. said. "They asked if we would like them to bring the gloves and we said 'yeah' and after practice we started playfighting."
Dozens of students were involved, either participating or watching, according to some of the students.
"Twenty kids from the football team and a couple of regular students," London said.
Some of those involved say the boxing started earlier than this fall and that others not involved knew it was happening.
"During our summer workouts," senior football player Isaiah Ross said. "Then some freshman kept it going through the school year."
As of Tuesday afternoon, Ross had filled out paperwork to voluntarily withdraw from Lee High. Most of the two dozen students involved also chose to go that route, avoiding additional disciplinary action.
School administrators spent much of Tuesday meeting with parents of the involved students. School system authorities met late Tuesday afternoon to discuss disciplinary action, according to the school system spokeswoman.
The school system released a brief statement to WBRZ Tuesday evening:
"Lee High School and The East Baton Rouge Parish School System are investigating a series of incidents involving 24 students at Lee High."
It's unclear what final disciplinary action the school system will take when it comes to the two dozen students.
Ross and London describe the videos as horseplay and nothing more than boys being boys.
Worried parents interviewed Tuesday said they recognize that the school system has rules, but argue what's happened in this case might be too steep.
"I don't condone what they were doing," Thomas London Sr. said. "But it was child's play and I don't think it's something their future should be affected by."

They obviously broke the first one when they talked about it
But whoa, way harsh. Planned boxing matches =/= school fights (in the spirit of the rule) IMO.

Damn. My P.E. coach would break out the gloves about once a week in jr. high. Not ashamed to say that we were all easily entertained with a good session of fisticuffs.

I think they overreacted and the football team will be short 20 players.

Yea this was definitely a climate driven overreaction. I honestly wish we would have sanctioned boxing in the school I teach at. Might would limit the number of fights we have

There's a Sonic about three miles from there.

They must not have seen fight club and learned the rules.
Cell phones and and or videos = amateurs

This story reminds me of how much I hated school administrators when I was in HS. They’re always these super dopey losers lacking even a single iota of coolness or common sense. Men in those positions are somehow even worse than the women, contrary to what you’d expect. Nothing gets them off more than using their small sense of power to make the lives of normal kids miserable, probably because they were shunned when they were in school. Only thing worse than them were the kiss arse cronies they recruited from the student body to spy on their fellow students. Those little shits then in turn grow up to be school administrators or work in Human Resources. Vicious cycle.

In what world do they think that the school is going to let these unsanctioned fights continue and risk the potential for a massive lawsuit if something really goes wrong and just spirals absolutely out of control?
These are still kids we’re still talking about here and they’re not exactly reservoirs of good judgment and cool composure.
Those fights are textbook liability and have no place on the school campus.

I think we can all agree they shouldn’t be doing it on the school. Give them all a warning and move on.
It was harmless horseplay and from the looks of the video they actually seemed decently self regulated in terms of sportsmanship.

There should be a Tiger Droppings fight club, unless there already is and nobody has talked. If not Oweo should be the organizer it and I get first shot at OWLFAN. Nobody needs their arse kicked more than that douche bag.

I went to the State Trooper Summer Camp when I was a kid. If you had a beef with another kid every day right before dinner and after the afternoon activity the troopers-councelors would put all the campers in a big circle and they would have boxing matches. After the 2nd or 3rd day the beefs were few and far in between because no one wanted to box. I think they should let's these kids duke it out for fun or if they have beef with each under the guidance of coaches/teachers. Probably stop a few shootings and teach them to man up.

I am still unsure what rule was broken. All participants were willing, and they wore gloves.
Maybe harsh punishment is being doled out, when no punishment is actually needed.

uh, a planned fight is still a fight.
there were maybe 3 fights my entire high school career. one was an all out black girl hair flying brawl.
the other two were planned "meet me at sonic (read:behind this building)"
if I was a person in charge- I would distribute harsh punishments
