yeah, I know we have a health and fitness board, but that's about being healthy and doing fitness, not about businesses...
Closing 134 locations... out of what appears to be around 400. Will get money to reopen rest of them.
More people might die from being unhealthy from not being able to exercise, than from COVID itself!!

2020 is the bleakest year of my life by a large margin

Doesn’t surprise me. I think a lot of people who were members of these big box gyms, but never went used the extra time to finally cancel memberships.
A lot of people invested in home gym equipment while they were closed.
Some joined smaller, local gyms as they were last to close and opened a lot sooner than the big corporate chains.
I go to an LA Fitness and while it stayed pretty packed, pre-covid...it’s been open for 2-3 weeks now and it’s empty every time I go. Even during old peak times.

The Peloton and Mirror home work out equipment seems to have made hay during quarantine. On site fitness gyms are hurting.
Although I do think there's a floor. A decent number of people go to the gym for social reasons as much as they do to work out.

The fact that gyms were forced to close while hundreds piled into Home Depot and Target is some of the biggest bs of the shutdown.

I would feel sorry for them except they still tried to charge their members for March and April while not being open for use

You know, this is odd to me. Not saying there is anything dirty but when you think about some of these bankruptcies and this decision (below), it does make you wonder...
Does the PPP give a type of low performing locale bailout for some while ignoring the mom and pops who never got a shot at getting in line to get a dime?
quote:
Mnuchin indicated in Senate testimony that the government may not disclose the names of those who took out loans from the Payroll Protection Program.
As of Friday, the PPP has supported 4.5 million loans for a total loan value of $512 billion, with roughly $130 billion still to be spent.

Or, lots of people figured out that
a) they can work out at home, and/or
b) walking/running/biking out of doors is a lot better experience that some stinky gym full of workout weenies.

That’s a case of trying to save face by doing the bare minimum after getting shite on initially

At 24hour right now. Will suck if it closes, my membership is just $20/year.

Caught them emptying out a location in Austin last week

Good. Membership mill that makes it hard to cancel starts to due off.

This won't be a topic here or on PTB but keep your ears open re: Mnuchin and the resistance to FOIA on the PPP. Just keep it in the back of your mind.
