You don't believe dealing is a unique crime based on the overwhelming market? There is no opportunity greater than the drug trade. Most drug dealers have other occupations.

NO is not the same as Alaska. I agree with your statement in many areas of the country but not here. Most of the dealers you see shooting it out down here are either on welfare or work at fast food joints to keep ther po satisfied. These are not guys selling to Tulane students. It is an entirely different demographic.

i would bet it was two drug dealers who were "beefing" that happened to be partying on bourbon at the same time and ran into each other

Most of the country isn't like that. LINK

Drug dealers these days are far from the stereotypes of blinged-out urban kids and long-haired dirtbags.

Sure, some dealers still fit those profiles, but there are also moms, teachers, construction workers, city workers, professional athletes and students who are dealing, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Small Time, Part Time

“Most of the people we encounter have a regular job of some kind,” says Jonathan F. Marshall, a marijuana-defense attorney in New Jersey. His clients include web designers, public-works employees and landscape-design engineers.

Income from dealing marijuana varies widely, depending on the quality of the product and the amount sold.

I agree. New Orleans is a unique animal in many ways. There are still more white collar type dealers but they are not shooting each other in the street. The reality is that there is heavy gang activity here and those guys will not go legit or hold down a 9 to 5 job. Many of these guys have rap sheets as long as your arm and if they can't sell they will make money in other violent ways.

We don't really have organized gangs here like LA or Chicago.

For a while, probably will. It's what happened after prohibition ended. These gangs were largely created by drug laws and will be around after drug laws are changed. But they'll lose power and fade over time. Nothing is as lucrative as the drug trade. Also, the homicide rate decreased following the end or prohibition, I expect it will again with a change in drug laws.

Very localized by neighborhood. There is some organization but not on the scale of la which actually makes it even more violent here. When you have 5 different groups in a small residential area it leads to more conflict in my experience

I hope you are right. I am a libertarian and all for legalizing drugs but I will go into it with my eyes wide open. There is simply a large criminal element in this city and I don't really see it going away anytime soon no matter what is done.

Some people will always be criminals. Hell, we've created generations of institutionalized people and it will take generations to change. But, I do believe it lessens the power of cartels and gangs because it reduces their most lucrative market.

I also think it will make a much safer society for law enforcement and the average citizen. I used to be as much of a drug warrior as anyone, but admit I was wrong.

If dealing is taken off the table because of legalization you will see robberies and theft go up because they will have no other way to earn.

then those crimes get dealt with but the larger effect will have been made.

First time I saw the video. Looking to Orleans St?(on mobile) I used to work at that hotel bar right up there on there on the corner. As is, I know work 2.5 blocks away, and left work just 3 hours before the shooting. This shooting does have me rethinking being back in the Quarter, even though at most, I grab a beer while waiting for valet(at that hotel) or walking to my car. Only time I have a beer while walking to car I have a coworker with me.

Jesus Christ. First time I'm seeing the video. Good thing the shooter is a horrible shot. Secondly, the scene right after speaks volumes about my city. Once my wife and I have kids there is no way I'm raising them here to become desensitized to shite like this like I am to it.

What a shite show. No attempt to preserve a crime scene at all including NOPD riding horses through the area. Doesn't really look like the first officers on scene made any attempt to locate the shooters either. They pretty much just stood around and talked on their radios.

Note that they are doing CPR on one of the people shot which doesn't look good for that person. Wouldn't be surprised if that turns out to be a fatality in a couple of days.
