MANUFACTURER:
Nissan - Certain Vehicles with CVT Transmissions
SUMMARY:
Nissan CVT issues are common among Nissan vehicles. Otherwise known as a continuously variable transmission, the feature was intended to increase the performance of vehicles by creating smoother gear shift capability. From 2012 to 2018, several models of Nissan vehicles received the transmission, including the Sentra, Versa, Versa Note, Altima, Rogue, and Murano models.
Some of the most common issues with the vehicles directly relate to the transmission. Reported issues include loss of power, transmission jerking, transmission slipping, CVT coolant hose leaks and failures, and a CVT error message being displayed. These problems call the Nissan CVT transmission reliability into question and can result in serious harm to unsuspecting drivers.
Nissan extended the warranty on some of these vehicles equipped with the CVT transmission from 5 years or 60,000 miles to 10 years or 120,000 miles. The extension covers repairs, replacements, and towing for issues related to the continuously variable transmission. For the warranty to be effective, vehicle owners must take their Nissan to a dealership for repairs.

CARS.COM — Nissan vehicles affected by service bulletin:
2013 Nissan Altima (four-cylinder engine)
2014 Nissan Altima (four-cylinder engine)
2015 Nissan Altima (four-cylinder engine)
2014 Nissan Rogue
2015 Nissan Rogue
2016 Nissan Rogue
Does not apply to Rogue Select models.
The problem: The continuously variable automatic transmission may shake, shudder, bump or vibrate during normal operation in certain Nissan vehicles, including select Altimas and Rogues. This is due to either a faulty valve body inside the transmission or the CVT needing to be replaced.
See More Service Bulletins
Corrective action: Nissan dealers will either replace the transmission or the valve body inside it. If a new valve body is installed, a new oil pan with an additional magnet will also be installed to collect excess metal fragments that develop over time as a result of normal transmission operation.
Warranty info: This action will be done free of charge under this service campaign. Eligibility depends upon the vehicle's identification number and whether certain codes are present in the drivetrain control module.
What owners should do: Call your local Nissan dealer with your VIN to determine if it's involved in this service bulletin. You can also call Nissan at 800-647-7261 or NHTSA at 888-327-4236. Reference TSB No. 15-084A.

CVT trans all you can do is buy a new one you are screwed

That's what I'm finding out......but now I'm in attorney mode because this should not happen on a transmission that is not being abused .....no tow package or trailer or offroading driving in mountains etc

It’s probably the transmission but a bad ignition coil will cause what appears to be transmission issues on those model Nissans with CVT’s.

I noticed all the new cars are putting cvts now. I want a new Honda but they have cvt now.

We have a 2009 Nissan Murano with 135K miles and have never had a problem with the transmission. Only think I can say is the transmission service is a lot more expensive on a CVT. Also have a 2014 Pathfinder with 85k miles and haven't had any problems with it either. Good luck.

THis is why we are Nissan customers

Same prob with 13 Sentra at 75k. Too far out of warranty, replacement $5k
So we traded it in for a new non-cvt Hyundai.

I bought my son in 1995 a brand new 1995 Nissan Hardbody V6 automatic 4x4 as basic wheels to get him through college for Xmas . Truck had roll bars, winch built in the bumper, fancy rims, and tint windows.
The transmission overheated 2 blocks from the dealer and the wife wanted me to get it home for Xmas eve to put a bow on it. Dealer towed it home so we could put a bow on it for our son. They came back the day after Xmas to pick it up. Not going to complain.
They changed the transmission and 1 pc radiator with transmission cooler 5 times in 3 yrs as they could never find out why water got in the transmission.
Found out it was a one piece radiator and transmission cooler. The area that hoses hooked up leaked from the radiator into the transmission cooler.
The dealer changed it to a separate radiator and transmission cooler no transmission issues after that.
He ended up keeping that truck 10 yrs no other major issues after they found the real issue and fixed it.

I've got a 2009 Altima with the CVT. Bought it new, drive slow and soft, and with 110K miles, I'm on transmission number 3.
First was covered by a recall. They replaced entire original transmission around 65K, and it failed on me again around 90K. Put in another new transmission, and I'm getting ready to pass this jewel of Japanese engineering along to someone with deeper pockets than me.

New nissans are also having problems with their sensors and they are low on parts.

On my third Altima with a cvt and all over 100,000 miles. Nissan uses and has been using these cuts in everyone one of their front wheel drive cars for a long long time.
They had some issues but the shear number of units yield a perceived high number of complaints. Co-worker has a Ford Focus on its 4th transmission.
Contact Nissan and being a repeat customer, they will probably offer some compensation.

I had one years back with the cvt transmission. I did the transmission service every other time it was factory recommended at the cost of several hundred dollars a pop but drove it with no issues until 170k miles them traded it in

May just be an update to the TCM. Fixed a ton of Altimas with the same problem by updating them.
Easiest way to tell if the valve body or multiple solenoids are burned is place stick in 1st gear not in D. If the car hesitates or shutters at take off then it's burned.
