It’s a consequence of being poor
Poorly educated maybe but cooking “healthy” is generally cheaper than eating McDonald’s or cooking unhealthy, it is just a matter of having the drive and making the time to do it.
The problem is people think eating health is a $6 bag of organic kale from Whole Foods and not a bag dried beans and brown rice.

I've been to WI -- I don't think WI can compete with the south

How’s Houston not on the list?

Don’t blame this on demographics.

I've spent quite a bit of time in Wisconsin and they can beat the south (except for Jackson, MS).

New Orleans used to be on these lists. Must be all the skinny jeans hipsters moving in and dragging us down...

Aren't all of these in Red States? Coincidence I think not.

Don’t blame this on demographics. There are a ton of overweight white people in the south. It’s partly a consequence of having better food.
No and yes, the sad fact is there is ~20% difference in obesity when comparing blacks to Caucasians. Pun intended that is a huge disparity. Yes in the fact that the diet in the South tends to mimic the traditional “peasant” food of old which isn’t the healthiest.

This list is flawed. I recently went to Disney World. There were people from sea to shining sea there. Many were fat riding on scooters. Obesity is not just a Southern problem.

The dirty south loves obesity
Its due to the fact that we have perfected the art of frying everything. If something can be eaten then it is probably better fried.
