And completely routed the Confederate Army of Tennessee from the field. On this date in history, Grant ordered a general assault along his entire line. Confederates under Braxton Bragg were entrenched along a strong defensive position called Missionary Ridge. The main attack was to be made by Sherman to the north while George Thomas's forces in the center were to take the entrenchments below Missionary Ridge and hold the Confederates' attention there while Sherman outflanked them.

Sherman got bogged down, however, and when Thomas's troops took the entrenchments at the base of Missionary Ridge, they defied orders and continued advancing up the ridge. Grant, observing from afar, immediately turned on Thomas and demanded to know who gave the order to Thomas's men to continue advancing. "Not I, General," was Thomas's curt reply.

Meanwhile, Thomas's men were pursuing the retreating rebels so closely, that their friends atop Missionary Ridge could not safely open fire on the Union host without hitting their own men. The result was an absolute disaster for the Confederates. Union soldiers and Confederates clashed briefly atop Missionary Ridge before the Confederate line gave up and the entire position collapsed. Tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers streamed for the rear into Georgia.

Confederate victory, which had seemed so certain just two months before, had turned into one of the biggest Union strategic triumphs of the war so far. They had successfully captured a vital railroad junction, cutting the Deep South off from Richmond and opening Atlanta up for capture. The victory was icing on the cake for Lincoln who now realized Grant was the man he needed commanding all of his forces in the field.

From an 1872 book about Grant:

“It was about this time that an ardent temperance man, in speaking of Gen. Grant’s successes to President Lincoln, repeated some of the stories in regard to Gen. Grant’s habits; adding.—
“It’s a pity he is such a drunkard.”
Mr. Lincoln, who had never countenanced these attacks, asked,—
“Do you know what kind of liquor he drinks?”
“No, sir,” was the answer; “and I don’t know that that is essential.”
“The reason I asked.” said Mr. Lincoln with a twinkle in his eye, but without moving a muscle of his face, “was, that, if I knew, I should like to send some of the same liquor to some of our other generals.” *

* Some one was lamenting to old George II that the war-office had placed confidence in such a red-haired, daring, hot-brained young officer as Gen. Wolfe, and sent him to Quebec; adding, “Wolfe is mad, your Majesty.”—”Is he?” said the king. “I wish he would bite some of my other generals.”

What a shame. So many flukey things had to go right for the union to win.... sound familiar?

It wasn't really flukey. Thomas's men had been soundly beaten two months prior at Chickamauga and wanted payback. They deliberately defied orders and kept going because their blood was up and they were out for revenge. As they ran up the ridge, thousands of them were screaming "Remember Chickamauga!"

The Union half-assed its way through that whole war. Confederate fetishists to this day basically brag about beating the spread.

By "bogged down" you mean where Sherman took the wrong hill?

Billy Goat Hill

(Admittedly the author in the link seems to have a grudge)

This may be the best synopsis of the Civil War I’ve ever heard.
