Still hits me right in the feels.

quote:

The storm had passed with no reports of deaths. Co-anchor Mel Showers and I, on the anchor desk, felt a sense of relief. You could see it in our faces and hear it in our voices, but that would soon change after introducing a report by WKRG Reporter Jennifer Mayerle. "It is a scene in Biloxi like no other", said Mayerle.

I watched that live or re-aired from the MS Coast with a bunch of folks who had just lost their home. Everyone knew it could have been much worse personally like this poor guy. You knew immediately anyone who saw that was going to have an intense emotional reaction.

2-3 days after the storm, we took our small boats to back bay in Biloxi to start search and rescue ops. when we got in the seaway there were dozens of shrimp boats at anchor, mostly Vietnamese who lived close to where this video was taken. Most had stayed on their boat in the protected waters during the storm, and now that was their only home and their only possessions on the boat. We found outback cooking at the courthouse in Gulfport the next day, asked them how much they would give us to give out, and they literally loaded the backs of our trucks and boats full of food boxes with burgers, bags of apples, many gallons of water, and big bottles of hand sanitizer to give out. We pulled up to one boat, lady was 8 months pregnant and dipping water out of the seaway canal (you could smell the pollution) to wash clothes and cooking rice with it. Needless to say we gave her a majority of the water we had and sanitizer. One of the worst parts, a few boats down near the Cowan Lorraine bridge one of their friends boat had sunk during the storm, and no one got out. Just so much devastation everywhere you turned after that bitch came through.

That was always hard to watch just thinking what he went through. A lot of people’s lives were changed that day.

Remember that interview. I lived a half mile off the beach in Long Beach when that bitch rolled through.

That a helluva reminder. It seems like forever ago but also seems like it just happened yesterday too. Weird. There must be some dust in my eyes or something to make them this watery.

Holy shite, I've never seen that. I cannot even imagine physically letting loose of someone, knowing they will die when I do.

I remember eating lunch and watching the news and saying that it was all overblown and much ado about nothing, and then the levees broke.

An interview with him a year before his death.

ETA: that dude went through some shite in his life. Really makes me appreciate how blessed/fortunate I am.

Why didn't y'all make shirts and trademarks And blast your faces all over the media?

Isn't that what "heroes" are supposed to do after disasters?
