Personally I like the Gary Schroen book better, which details Jawbreaker and the team into Afghanistan 15 days after 9/11 to hook up with the Northern Alliance.
Billy Waugh (SF, MACV-SOG) was 71 when he and the rest of the team were inserted into the Panjshir with 3 million in cash in a suitcase.
One of the books by the Garys (Gary Schroen or Gary Berntsen) talks about going to REI to buy gear for the trip. Sort of amazing to think about them having to buy gear off the rack, and in a few years there would be Burger King and coffee shops at Bagram.

Stirrups so short their knees rode up around their ears.

MACV-SOG
Since you brought them up, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the excellent podcast by John Stryker Meyer, SOGCast about MACV-SOG. 60 episodes so far, just some unbelievable stories about the SOG, the Vietnamese Kingbee pilots, the Little People, etc.
Heroics, entire teams disappearing without a trace, brave arse Little People and pilots, pararescue teams, it's excellent.

Those guys are basically real life ninjas.
They are that good. They are extremely lethal
It would take pinning them down somewhere with a shitload of people against them and it’s still gonna end being a Benghazi situation and those 12 and gonna seem like 250 soldiers you are fight because they are gonna lay down most of the guys fighting against them

isn't that what the movie 12 strong was based on?
There’s a book and a movie. But this thread is the one that will put these heroes over the top.

Thanks for that. I'm going to check it out. Some of the best reading you can do about the Vietnam era is about the early days of MACV-SOG. I've been meaning to re-read some books I have put back, but haven't gotten back to them. I think this will do for the time being.

Just a guess, I bet that pic wasn’t taken the first day and once they got settled a bit they likely modified them like all good servicemen do when using subpar gear. Thats a normal tactic in military, taking shite and making a shite sandwich out of it. This just happened to be foreign equipment so to speak.

I did not know the story and I haven’t seen the movie. Thanks for sharing

Years ago I read the book Horse Soldiers which I just learned was renamed 12 Strong. Sounds like I should check out the movie too.

It started when Jocko interviewed him on Jocko Podcast 180 six years ago. I think Jocko had him on two more times, and essentially sponsored Meyer to interview whomever he wanted on the new SOGCast podcast created just for him, because of so many jaw dropping stories that came out from him, Lynne Black, etc. It's different to read it than it is to hear from guys that were there, for sure. I was a kid when the NDAs for MACV-SOG started expiring and Rambo came out, but hearing these guys laugh about remembering being pulled through the trees for miles on a STABO rig just hits different.
One of my favorite anecdotes, which has happened in repeatedly, is that Vietnamese Kingbee pilots were absolutely fearless, sometimes to the point of recklessness. The Americans would be telling them it was too dangerous to extract a team, and they would almost always respond, "Kingbee go down," meaning, "I'm trying to pick them up anyway."
One dude, interviewed (SOGCast 40 was part 1), lost both of his hands because the controls of the chopper essentially burned them beyond recognition while he was trying to save everyone on board with a semi-controlled landing.

The movie was great.

They make a good bourbon too
Some of those guys are really active in veteran support groups in the DFW area. They show up regularly at non-profit fund raisers. Good dudes. Their bourbon is pretty good, too.

I can't be the only one wondering what the frick metaphorical horses are, can I?
Who knows, but my instant guess was horsepower. As in, “They were given horses, 450 horse powered mini-tanks apiece!” Or some such attempt at poetic flair.
