We've always done cabbage and black eyed peas on NYD but last night one of the kids asked me about twelve grapes at midnight. Apparently there was some text thread of his friends wishing happy new year and someone brought it up. But nobody else on the thread had heard of it.

I looked it up and its apparently a thing in Spanish culture. But most of the kids texting I think were raised in fairly typical, modern Cajun households.

Anybody heard about this one? It's a new one to me.

First heard of it on the radio yesterday, new to me. Also something about being under the dining room table.

It’s been making the rounds on some social media platforms the past few days. I had not heard of it before.

My wife’s mother was originally from Spain and this has always been a tradition in our house. Our kids have kept the tradition going now that they are starting to leave the house.

A Latin American common practice.

I knew of 12 grapes for wishes, Suitcase to travel, and Yellow underwear.
I forgot them all this year being boring Gringo. A few more:

+ Yellow Underwear: Wearing yellow underwear on New Year's Eve is believed to bring fortune for the upcoming year.
+ Some people run around the house with an empty suitcase to symbolize a desire to travel in the new year.
+ Eating 12 grapes at midnight, each symbolizing a wish, is a traditional practice.
+ Making the first step after midnight with the right foot symbolizes starting the year on the 'right foot.'
+ Holding a note or coin at midnight is believed to bring financial stability.

Latin America? Interesting. I figured it was another stupid thing older white women came up with.

I say Latin America because that's where I experienced it before, in South America.

Had this as a trivia question Tuesday night.. Spain celebrates New Year's by eating 12 of what? I mentioned grapes but ultimately we guessed olives... first I had heard of this.

My wife sat under the kitchen table last night and put my grapes in her mouth.

For good luck.

Was in Seville, Spain for this New Year’s. Was in Madrid 4 years ago for NYE. Had a great time both places.

The 12 grapes is real. They give them out at every New Year’s party. The tv countdown has chimes and an on screen visual count down as well. It’s one grape per chime and they need to be gone when the chimes are over. It’s a blast.

I grew up with it in a Spanish household, so we have continued the tradition (along with black eyed peas and cabbage) in our family.

Learned about it from my Puerto Rican wife. Been doing it every year since we’ve been together.

Similar to big pharma, the big grape industry is just trying to push their products.
