11 yr old shot on the corner of MLK and Freret last night. Don't think MLK dreamed of it.

The preliminary NOPD report says an "unknown subject in a vehicle" opened fire on the 17-year-old shortly before 8 p.m., as the teen was in the 1500 block of Freret Street. Both the teen and the 11-year-old boy were struck by gunfire and taken by EMS to an area hospital for treatment. With the shooting, 22 people 17 and younger have been wounded by gunfire in New Orleans this year, according to a Times-Picayune tally of NOPD reports. The youngest victim, a 5-month-old girl, was with her parents inside a car when someone opened fire Jan. 14 in Algiers, striking the infant in the foot and thigh. An additional six juveniles have been killed in the city this year.

Shooter must not have known the statues came down.

This never would've happened at the corner of MLK ST and MLK Blvd

Too bad it happened at the corner of MLK Blvd and Whiteys Fault Ave.

Not surprised. Unqualified, understaffed, and underfunded police force will lead to more and more crime.
Coupled with an apathetic mayor who doesn't care about the community most adversely affected by gun violence, it's a shock NOLA hasn't seen more case like these in recent years.

No shootings at the corner of Lee and Perkins.

Sad. Prayers for the family. Losing an 11 year old child would be crushing.

No amount of money, qualifications, desire to eradicate crime would or could stop this. It's a morality issue.

That's right where they "re-vitalized" the Melpomene projects.
Knocking down projects to build more expensive projects and calling it "mixed income communities" is not the solution. That land should have gone to private developers. It's prime real estate location.

Serious question, what comes first, a street going to complete shite or a street being named after MLK?
Like when naming streets, did they actively go around looking for the worst area and when they found it they named it MLK? Or after naming a street in his honor do these types of people move there and start to kill each other? Every city has an MLK street and its always the same demographic.

William Freret owned the Freret Cotton Press Company, which became the first large industrial firm in New Orleans.
Racist street, statues, names, etc. causing crime once again in our Utopia of a city, New Orleans.
