This girl sounds like she had bigger issues than bullying, poor parenting, uncaring educators, or easy access to harmful inanimate objects.

tragic story, but I think there is more to it than what we are reading here.

The article provides plenty of info. Any casual reader that needs more info than what was provided is just looking for more to judge these people on. It won't make you feel better. The world is just shite sometimes. Accept it and move on.

The kids that bullied her need some mental readjustment. By that I mean dig her grave, be her pallbearer, help with the autopsy, and have it reiterated over and over they are the reason she is dead.

But the kids who bullied her should be locked up.

Seems like an emotionally charged leap.

I'm not excusing their behavior. Punishment should definitely be in order. I don't think they had the intent of her committing suicide, I would hope not. They probably didn't realize how damaging their actions were. It isn't an excuse, bullying is a disgusting thing, but I don't think sending these kids to prison is going to help anyone.

m not going to downvote you, but the question of her access to a firearm shouldn't be the top concern with this story.

Why shouldnt this be a question in this story? An 11 year old should never be able to access a firearm without their parents help/supervision.

This is a terrible story....those kids are assholes....but that is just a dumb statement.

its up there....kids being assholes and not quite having a grasp of how fricked up it is to make fun of said girl isn't all that surprising. I can remember tons of things we'd make fun of other kids for that years later you look back on and think how shitty that was, but at the time you didn't really grasp the depth of it all. Nothing this bad but kids can be dicks.

An 11 year old being able to gain access to a gun to off herself is concerning. I'm not placing the blame on guns or saying gun control fixes this...but to dismiss it entirely is foolish.

Bethany only shared what she was going to do with one of her close friends, Feucht told the paper.

“She told her she loved her and that she was her best friend forever, but that she was going to kill herself when she got home,” said Feucht.

It was that smile that kids at school allegedly noticed and picked on, according to Bethany’s dad, Paul Thompson.

I think that’s why she took (her life),” Thompson told the Columbus Dispatch.

it also sounds like there's a lot we don't know yet

I just don't get it. They picked on her about her smile...got to be more to it than that. Why are so many young people vulnerable to words to the point they commit suicide?

If someone is hell bent on suicide, they will find a way. Hanging, pills, etc. How many people have prescription painkillers in their homes? How about bedsheets or knives? Or vehicles and garden hoses?

Why are people SO obsessed with toeing the political line on guns? Of course the child getting access to unsupervised use of the weapon isn't the ONLY issue here, but you're being disengenous at best if you deny it isn't part of it.

this is my biggest question. Most of us got picked on for something- too fat, too skinny, wore glasses, sucked at sports, ugly, ginger kid- you name it. It usually ended in a fight with the bully or the bullied getting bloodied. I just don't get the cultural shift that brought about kids killing themselves or their classmates. I think we had one suicide at my high school in 4 years. Thats why I don't believe "bullying" is the culprit. I think its an excuse some make up.

do you blame the car for a fatal crash involving alcohol? The distiller?
Why are you so obsessed with finding something/someone else to blame other than the one who takes their own life?

Social media was a game changer.

Bullying is and has always has been part of a larger shite cocktail but social media has made it a much bigger part and something to take more seriously than ever.

I mean in this incident it was an 11 year old kid, I'm not sure we can safely make that assumption

Once again this is not the issue. The issue is the attempt itself and why, not the method.

Yea, because that'll do a lot of good in turning them into productive members of society.

You're being disingenuous by pretending they're the same when you know, at least I hope, that they aren't.

So if she was 9, 7, or 5 years old, would you say the same?
