Happened to me last year. Couple of months with no health insurance and I end up falling off a cliff. Initial bill was $40k, cut down to $23k after talking to them (once the swelling went down and I was able to speak ) . Blessed with a good job, but this could have crippled someone not in the same situation as me.

Sue them for doing procedures you refused and then billing you for them. There would likely be 50 lawyers in your town willing to take the case. Maybe it will be your lucky day and you will get 350 million.

Something is missing. Room and board costs max 10k for 4 days. Look at your itemized statement and tell us what else you had done.

He didn't refuse and undoubtedly signed a consent to treat.

That is the full story. Busted my head on a pool, some dumb bitch tried to push me in.

12 weak arse stitches and a CT scan I refused to have done but they told me I “needed”.

$7800 dollars for ct scan
$2000 for ER visit (small urgent care in Florida)
$1000 for medication and “administration of vaccine”

Several years ago in Canada I broke my arm and badly dislocated my shoulder. I got a ride to a free-standing trauma center that refused to take (U.S.) insurance. X-rays, a 20 minute consult (the shoulder was set for free on the mountain by an MD working with the ski patrol) a sling, a followup plan for when I got home, and a prescription and the drugs all told came to about $180 U.S.

That socialized medicine up there really sucks, eh?

Did OP tell the clinic he was uninsured and unemployed and broke before he started his appointment?

Yes they were aware I was uninsured right from the start.

I’m not mad about $2,000 we bill, that’s standard price.

I’m pissed about the unnecessary CT scan that I refused to have done and they forced me to have it anyway. That single CT scan is $7800 of the 10k bill.

It was pointless

Opinions needed.....So the people’s house I was at have Homeowners insurance. They are looking into claiming it on their homeowners insurance and that could maybe take care of the bill??? Is that possible?

They said technically I could sue them because of “water around the pool caused the accident” and get it covered that way. That was their idea. Lifelong friends btw

I'm interested to hear how they forced you to get a CT scan. Did they sedate you? Strap you down? Have a guard hold a gun to your head? What was their method of subduing you so they could put you on the scanner and slide you in?

That's slightly more than I would charge, cash, for a new patient consult and some xrays for an injury I didn't have to reduce. Throw in the pills from a pharmacy with a goodrx coupon and you've got the exact same $180 total in a US clinic.

I fail to see your point

Probably called him a pussy if he refused. Usually always works.

Hospitals charge that much because of atrocious reimbursement from insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid.
Truth.

From what I’ve heard, our hospital is only reimbursed 18% from Medicare/Medicaid.

That is one of the large reasons for inflated prices.

That's also why dealer shop rates are generally much higher than independents. The automakers pay a percentage of the hourly rate for warranty work.

Are you saying g they expect you to pay $78,000? I doubt it. Since you're insured you'll pay your out of pocket maximum and the insurance company will pay a bit more. I'd guess the hospital may get $10,000 total.

I had minor outpatient surgery once and the bill was $52,000. Between my money and my insurance's money they got
$4800.

Update:

They did 42% discount for uninsured. Bill is now at $6250+ $400 to get stitches removed.

Gonna try out “charity care” program and see if they’ll help me out. Starting new job next week so idk.

And somehow the homeowners insurance company said they wouldn’t pay the bill because “lack of witnesses” to the incident.

Homeowners are friends of mine and tried to get me covered. Seems like some bullshite.
