Yep, don't live there. I worked at the Richmond refinery out of college. I took the job because of the salary and knew full well I would be cutting it close money wise. My employer paid for my MBA at Cal and maybe yours has some further education incentives as well. They have a really good weekend MBA deal now if you can stand taking classes with the trashiest, douchiest student body on the planet. Take the step up in salary, work for a few years and switch jobs, locations, part of the world, whatever you want. Your options will be endless.

Got a job offer in San Jose for $100000/year as an Engineer. Since the cost of living is in a complete new league compared to Louisiana, is this salary worth anything or is it chump change compared to the the California standard for a single person?
$100,000 in Cali? Chump change. I hear you can make that just by killing someone and wearing dresses.

If you will accept living in a 1 bedroom apartment with about 3000 a month rent, 4 dollar gasoline etc, I think you'll find you can survive barely on what is probably going to be 50K annual after taxes. Probably be better to move farther out from San Jose to make best bang for your buck.
California and the bay area are great places, but the cost is just stupid.

What's so bad about Richmond? Is that the town in the movie Coach Carter?

My offer was with SunPower in Richmond and it would have been the same salary that I had about 12 months ago, but it would have been a huge cost of living pay cut.
My salary now would require me to be north of $300K by a lot to live there.

Did not read the entire thread, but you might want to research the drought situation over there (not sure it affects San Jose).

A single person making 100k in CA, you'll be fine.

Where are you guys getting your numbers from? If he wants to pay that much he can but it's not like there aren't much cheaper options in San Jose.
OP, do your own research. You can easily make it in San Jose on $100k if you don't have ridiculous spending habits.

To the op - what type of engineering? You will be struggling on 100k but live in San jose - depending where - as close your job as you can. It's beautiful there so you will want to use all of your time outside of world enjoying the hiking and outdoors things. Network like hell too.
The best advice is take the job ( did you accept too quickly?) and make a career plan to get you into a better paying position. About 175k is reasonably comfortable. I miss being able to boat there.

Yes, taxes and housing will be way more expensive. But there's 2 sides to every coin. For instance, some of my costs are a lot less than when I lived in Texas.
My utility bill was around $300 a month in Texas. In California, it's around 50 or so. I did not turn my heater on one time this past winter. And if you live within a handful of miles from the coast, you won't even have an air conditioner. Not one building in the town I live in has AC.

If you can find a room mate to split the cost of renting, you will be more than fine. If you are having to cover $2500/mo on your own, you will still be okay but probably living below your current standards. $100k in that area is a good start, tons of opportunities more than anything and a very good place to grow. Having the ability to be in a prime location with tons of growth AND making $100k sounds like a no-brainer.

Come on man. Don't be ridiculous. When was the last time you lived in the Bay Area? I live there now and I can categorically say this is wrong. You can live a pretty decent life in San Jose as a single guy making $100K, as long as you don't go overboard.

Yes, but you don't need that much for a single guy. Unless the guy wants to buy a boat or have a home with a yard, he doesn't need that much. If he does, then even $175K is not enough. There are certain things you give up by living in California, but you gain other things. Trips to the mountain, trips to the beach, hiking don't cost a whole lot.

If you can find a home to share with 2 family of mexicans, you should do alright with the 100K salary.

Move there, enjoy a modest engineer's lifestyle in an awesome part of the country, meet new people, get good job experience...seems like a no brainer to me.

If you're single and renting then you need to add $30k to your salary to live in the Bay Area.
If you're married with children and plan on buying, then you need $60k more between the two of you.
