Most of that movie was shot at the old Jazzland property. They built a rig prop there.

my takeaway is that it was 100% preventable and nobody went to jail.

It’s crazy how events have long lasting consequences-
I was on a conf. call with BP that morning. What we were working on would have fundamentally changed the biofuels business and agriculture (in many areas) as we know it today.
BP had already started to move people, lease land, build pilot plants, etc.
We were all waiting on go to see how to scale it up.
When I said what I saw on the news, the guy on the other end said, “Lord, I hope it’s not one of ours”

True Story... I got up that morning and saw the news reports. I had a lunch appointment with a senior engineer and his boss (engineering manager for BOP systems) who both worked for Cameron. I picked them up at Cameron and headed for Taste of Texas for lunch. The scope of what happened wasn’t really known yet. On the drive over I asked them what they had heard. One of the guys said “all we know is it wasn’t our shite that caused this”. They both chuckled. Little did any of us know that their BOP would end up getting recovered and escorted by the FBI back to Houston one day as part of a widespread criminal investigation.
Cameron didn’t do anything wrong but the lack of maintenance by Transocean as the owner of the BOP sure left a trail of devastation behind them.

My husband worked for BP at the time. His phone was blowing up with messages while we watched the reports on the Houston news. I looked at him and said, “You know this is going to be y’all’s fault.” He said, “Yep”, and kept getting dressed for work.

I remember going on a cruise not long after and the Gulf was just covered in oil. You could see it especially when the waves would crash against the side of the ship.

Remember coming home from work for days where that was the news. My son was an infant. The live feed of that underwater camera and the oil pouring out was shown for days.

And our best responses were more inline with putting a trash basket over a roach then stopping an ever-spewing oil spill.
