Trucking industry official warns 1 million truckers needed over next decade to meet demand

Chris Spear, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations, told "Cavuto: Coast to Coast" on Tuesday that over the next decade more than one million truckers will have to join the industry "just to maintain current economic demand."

Spear, who is the head of the nation’s leading organization representing the interests of the trucking industry, acknowledged that there is a trucker shortage and stressed that "aggressive steps" are needed to address the "problem."

Being drivers needed to deliver fuel to gas stations are in short supply, it could cause a fuel shortage, which could lead to more pain at the pump this summer. It could also lead to increased prices for other essential items.

According to the National Tank Truck Carriers trade group, up to 25% of trucks are parked around the country because there are not enough qualified truck drivers. That number is up 15% from the beginning of last summer.

Seems like an unbiased source looking for high compensation from the people he represents.

I got two young sons. This non-expense bearing road to success pleases me.

My daughter will be on the PGA tour so that's taken care of as well.

We need high speed rail in this country, not for commuter traffic but for the transportation of goods.

Can they ensure to teach them that getting in the left lane to pass another big rig at 3 mph faster is unacceptable?

Truckers and the mechanics that keep the trucks running are in short supply. I know because I am a heavy-duty truck mechanic. At any one point in time I could literally go work for like three or four different people because they always need the help

You know how to work on motors run by electric batteries?

People won’t even be driving trucks in a decade.

No, because trucks use diesel engines at the moment. Every year there is something new these trucks get on them so learning about some new thing won't be anything new to mechanics. Even electric motors.

Silicon valley already creating driverless trucks, only a matter of time before they replace all truck drivers.

If you can pass a hair follicle and haven’t killed anybody recently you can pretty much get a driving job. I’ve talked with more trainees at my company that could barely speak English than I care to admit.

Anyone that's driven around or near big rigs lately knows this is true.

They’ve been talking about this shortage since I was in college and that was 10 years ago. Not new news

I think that is because Better Than Ezra would always make a play on that in their shows. "The road starts right here" or something like that.
