Ok, then don't waste people's time trying to execute a 15 minute pass. That fricking simple. Stay your arse in the right lane and deal with going 70 mph as opposed to going 75 mph.

Do truck drivers know how their trucks work? If my vehicle takes 8 minutes to complete a pass I would stay my arse in the right lane.

Often times it's about momentum. If those trucks hit their brakes with a full load, then have a hill to climb, it kills their momentum and it'll back up the right lane as they try to get back up to speed.

As opposed to backing up the left lane?

frick that. Truck drivers need to learn lane discipline.

It's either back up the left lane and force left laners to drive closer to the speed limit, or back up the right lane by going 10-20mph below the speed limit. The latter is much more dangerous.

What I'm hearing is we have a million loads on the road that should be on rails instead.

, because trucks use diesel engines at the moment. Every year there is something new these trucks get on them so learning about some new thing won't be anything new to mechanics. Even electric motors.

You still need the mechanics, they are in short supply.

Truck drivers back up both lanes on all terrains in my area. It's a fricking pandemic.

Here’s the real deal. You are driving a big truck. The car in front of you is going 60 mph. You get in the left lane. You get beside them, they freak out and jump to 70mph. You get behind them. Three miles later, you do the dance again. Alllll the way to wherever they decide to give you a brake check and exit the interstate.

Can they ensure to teach them that getting in the left lane to pass another big rig at 3 mph faster is unacceptable?

It isn’t the truckers who need educating.

It very much is unfortunately. I think they've been hiring anyone with a pulse in the past decade or so and it shows. Especially on the gulf coast.

This.

Multiply the carelessness exhibited by average dry van truck drivers (which is bad enough) by about 100, and you get the average sugar cane truck driver. Multiply that by about 50 and you get the average dump truck driver.

Tesla's autopilot system can't get here fast enough.

I have a friend that owns a trucking company, he says what hamstrings his business more than anything is being able to find truck drivers that can pass drug tests and show up for work

Chemical drivers can make $75-90K a year.... there are sign-on bonuses offered from nearly every company, safety bonuses.... etc.

They make a descent living.

You're not wrong, guys that are just drivers for us, do not own the equipment at all, are making $75k+ per year, are home 4-6 nights per week, don't work holidays unless they want, etc. Owner/operators are around $150k+. These are guys with hazmat and tanker endorsement. We could easily hire 5-10 more drivers this week and keep them busy.

frick no.

The left lane will always be for speeders. Yes it's illegal and you don't have to agree with it. But what is dangerous is when a line of cars, who have been flowing along at 80 mph for MILES, suddenly have to slow down to 65 because the "professional" driver needs to pass the Swift rookie trying to find the right gear. That line of cars then gets frustrated at the semi barely plodding along, which leads to right side passing and that semi being "trapped" in the left lane.

Its not your job to make others slow down to what you find acceptable.

Rates fixing to go through the roof. Big trucking companies fixing to make bank. Spot quotes all day every day.

Kind of wish I was still brokering. We used to make a killing on spot quotes. Pay a truck to drive to south Texas and deadhead home for another load and still make close to $800 a load.
