So you think that in a decade, you can send a driverless truck from Boston to Seattle on I-90 across Montana and the Cascade Mountains in a snow storm in January where chains on tires are required?

and put up with endless amounts of shitty drivers in cars, harassment from police, terrible food and facilites in truck stops, being away from your family for weeks at a time, work for a company that knows you by a number, paychecks that make you wonder if you'd make more at McDonalds, constantly being held at warehouses that are entirely too slow to load or unload...
You’ve got a job my friend

FIFY, I've been doing it for a decade now.

Yet.

If wages for drivers went up as high and as quickly as lumber prices, then I would leave the office and get back behind the wheel. For now, I will keep driving my desk, but I can be bought.

A Safe reliable Coast to Coast rail system could handle most of this traffic in goods

So....we’re going to put more trucks on the road but we’re also trying to cut back on fossil fuel usage...something has go to give here....and I’m an oil and gas man by the way.

You can turn six figures right now as a shorthaul CDL driver. It's ridiculous, but that's how bad they're hurting for drivers right now. Multiple times per week I'm told that our shipments are ready but they can't find a truck to put under it. It's frustrating for suppliers and for their customers right now.

One of our delivery drivers recently quit and bought his own truck. He does pick up loads between BR and Houston and is home almost every night. He showed me his weekly stub and he’s bringing in at least $3500 weekly after taxes with insurance and maintenance covered. Only thing he’s responsible for is his note which is $1200 a month. After he showed me that, it really questioned why I’m not driving a truck

I'm in the chemical world and we're struggling every day to get our orders set up on our carriers -

#1 A number of our customer base keeps ordering last minute, urgent asap

#2 All industries are busy right now - Amazon, walmart, frozen goods, pulp and paper, etc so drivers are all being worked hard right now

Our volume is so high that my company quit taking on new accounts so we can service our current accounts properly. It’s funny because we were in a “freight recession” before the pandemic but the industry exploded since.

I keep asking my carriers -

Why are ya'll advertising for drivers in the same places every other carrier is?

The average Joe doesn't understand that a chemical hauler can make $90K a year these days with what chemical drivers are being paid right now. Advertise your pay!

I never hear an ad on the radio or see a commercial on TV. There are no billboards on I-10/12 advertising for drivers and what the pay scales are.... My point is - no one outside of the trucking world knows that you pay well!!

Sad but true.... I know a lot of companies moving away from owning trucks and outsourcing because insurance costs and liability exposure isn't worth it. We need an end to multi-million dollar law suits awarded off the backs of companies. You never hear an individual being sued for that much, only companies. Why is that? - Company Insurance Limits >>>>> Individual Insurance Limits.
If we had real reform, we would see more trucks. Until then, Yes Gordon gonna eat and continue to eat well.

We found the person who doesn't know how a truck works.

The trucks have governors.

We need high speed rail in this country, not for commuter traffic but for the transportation of goods.

Rail would seem like a good solution for longer haul situations if their infastructure is up to it.
