Most of our misery is self chosen, There is zero reason any competent person would’ve been on the highway.
I do feel for them, but damn. Unless you have a serious reason to be on the road up there in the last couple of days, this is on you.
With today’s technology and information present, You have to be smarter.

What if you lost electric and driving to a safer place?

I know. My wife wants to come back today and I don't know. Its supposed to get in the 40s today, so that will help a lot. I'm telling her to not leave until at least 3.

I55 north from Batesville ms to Memphis is crazy for all reports. An hour trip from Oxford to Batesville
To Memphis is taking 4/5/6 hours due to crap conditions and accidents.
And parents are wondering why uber drivers and private drivers are canceling on those kids.
Idk why it isn’t closed!

There’s hope with warm temps the next three days that they can get a lot of stuff restored. Crews from south MS are here today through the end of the week hopefully to speed the process up. My boss wants me to come to an office with no power or water.

Im at 50+ hours without power. Internal house temp is 38. It'd probably be less if I didn't have a generator and a couple heaters going. I've been through hurricanes and ice storms. Hard to say which is worse. I guess they're about equally worse. They both have their own unique issues, but they're a lot alike in many ways.
Breakfast consisted of coffee and andouille on the grill.

Not having to lose all your food is solid plus for freeze and no power
But god damn it sucks sitting in 40 degree house. Wish i had a fireplace

Yeah idk .. Ice storm or hurricane. Both suck.
My daughter keeps saying how grateful that she is that she was able to come home .. and this momma is grateful as well.
DMagic, my brother was a lineman — now works in the office — but I gained a lot of patience when he started working. The fact is that everyone lineman wa ts everyone’s power restored asap so that they can get home — safely — to their own families asap.
God bless an protect all that are helping in any way!

People on here were acting like I was crazy for talking about taking a vacation if a severe ice storm was predicted.
I doubt they think its quite so crazy now.
And for the Ole Miss situation I blame the school in part because according to parents with students there they didnt cancel class until the last minute so are you going to drive home out of state while missing class potentially? They basically ensured those kids were there until it was too late to safely leave.

Ole Miss announced Thursday that the campus was closing on Monday and that all university events and activities were canceled beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday. Our friends daughter came home bc of this announcement.

Also .. they did encourage those with options to leave to do so. I think that was on Friday — maybe that could have been done earlier.
BUT … like with Hurricane evacuations, don’t wait for someone to tell you what to do .. if you don’t feel safe, gtfo. Or relocate to a friends so you’re at least not alone and pool resources.
The school is doing all that they can .. warming centers — food even for those who don’t have meal plans — buses are going to run today (where its possible) to shuttle students to the warming centers/stores that may be open. Food/bus transport means employees have to be able to safely get to the location as well as leaving their own families in the same conditions as the students.
There are also many parents commenting that their kids are making the best of it and helping each other.
I think hindsight in any situation is 20/20. Tons of patience is what is needed now.
