To be clear the team still needs to fill some holes but most of those are now in depth.

I still see DT, S, TE IOL as round 1 & 2 priorities, but depending on how things fall out in the draft the Saints should be in a position to take the BPA regardless of position. Maybe with the exception of QB & OT.

Curious as to everyone thought on draft needs at this point.

I actually like this approach. Fill needs through free agency and swing big in the draft.

Haven't the saints met with some tackles in pre draft meetings?

Agree DL or OL will be the first 2 choices with BPA at one of these positions

Haven't heard OT's mentioned, but why not of the value is there.

We have Ram, Hurst and Penning which look good on paper but if you can get a stud on a rookie contract you do it.

I do think IOL is a bigger need though, McCoy has been banged up the last two seasons missing time, Ruiz will need a new deal next season and well, Peat is Peat.

It’s been a good FA period for the Saints. Went in with needs for starters and depth at OL, DL, RB, S, QB and LBer. Now we can go BPA on OL, DL, S or LBer without having to try to land a starter at any of those positions.

Agreed. Would love to see us add a DE & LB before the draft though to really free us up for BPA.

DE/Edge available:
Jadeveon Clowney....Potential starter or at least rotational pass rusher. Coming off good season against the run but lack of sacks should make him fairly cheap. We made a push a couple years ago to try and get him
Frank Clark.....Could still start but probably best as rotational pass rusher
Yannick Ngakue...Good pass rush, weak against the run
Melvin Ingram...Older but good situation pass rusher
Justin Houston..Older but good situation pass rusher
Leonard Floyd...Older but good situation pass rusher
Calais Campbell..Great 3-4 end, probably not the best fit for us but he could still be good against the run with some pass rush

LBs available:
Dru Tranquill..Could fit us well, good coverage skills and should be fair priced for a borderline starter in the league. Would be a starter if/when we have 3lbs on the field but that does not happen too often
Bobby Wagner...Showed last season he can still play, but would probably cost too much. Plus since we typically only have 2lbs on the field which do you sit Davis/Werner/Wagner?? Would be a good problem to have
Myles Jack......Should be cheap, quality backup
Anthony Walker..Should be cheap, quality backup

WR could use another good body as well
Jarvis Landry and/or Marquez Callaway could & should be back for the right price

yep.

Saints have done this for years. I think most teams would like to say they do this, but I well remember the years prior to Payton and how we seemed to be so lost throwing shite against the wall. Payton said... that Parcells said... that most years there's only about 4-6 organizations who know what the frick they're doing and the rest are just hoping. That was the Saints for most of their history prior to 2006.

There's no doubt that Payton rubbed off on Loomis--I'm sure Payton is better for having worked with Loomis to some degree, but the opposite is definitely true. As much as I harbor (I believe justified) some serious hard feelings for Payton leaving us for "greener pastures", I am very impressed with him as far as leadership goes. He "Lead UP" just as much as he "Lead DOWN".

Why not Kwon Alexander? He knows the system and would be a good back-up/rotational guy. And should be relatively cheap.

Payton`s ego got in the way of his free angency celections.
He loved to go after players who were often injured in
college and in free agency. He thought he was GOD and they
would majicly be cured because of him.GO look at his record
of draft and FA choices and see if I`m wrong.

I don't think TE is a round 1 & 2 priority with the needs at DT, S & IOL. I also think LBer depth needs to be higher on the list than TE.

I hope that we go into the bargain bin for elderly guys like Ingram and Houston. They are still productive guys and don't cost a lot. We need bodies at edge.

I imagine Campbell is going to want what he considers market rate or to play for a contender.

They should, but probably won't for whatever reasons, I wanted them to last year. They didn't and the Jets got him for cheap and he played great for them, but Ellis broke out last season, so, it worked out. If they had signed Alexander last season, then maybe Ellis doesn't get the chance, but Ellis is gone now, and so they really should bring Alexander back.

They can draft a TE in the later rounds, I heard there's some really good ones in this draft here.

I would agree but the beauty of BPA is If you don't have to reach to fill a "need"

If you're picking at 29 and the top rated guy in your draft board is a TE and he's there you don't pass him up to get a DT or S that is rated further down your board. Not id you have the top 2 or 3 players that are closely rated and and all are available you can lean going with need over talent rating. IMO.

It also doesn't help us out a lot talking about specific players because we have little clue to how the Saints rate each player. We may debate over Ika and Smith being the top two DT's and the Saints may have Benton as their top DT prospect. Then you have to valuated the player vs what round you're in. (BTW it's just an example, I know none of these guys are the top DT's in the draft.)

Which is remarkable considering this is where we've spent most of our high draft picks.

How about veteran guys?

If they can get a vet cheap and they will buy in on being just a situational pass rusher I think it would be a good addition. If they have the mindset they could be a good mentor in camp as well. Teach how to avoid needless injuries would be a start

Holding grudges hurts no one but the person holding them. It also helps to look at this in context. Payton transformed this entire middling franchise and gave us our greatest moments, for that I am eternally grateful and will forever be a fan of his.

A similar thing could be said about Saban and LSU, though I can see why fans would be upset with him. Payton is different though. It’s not like he was here for a cycle, he was here for 16 years which is among the longest tenures in modern NFL history. Burnout happens, it’s happened to me and probably many others on this board, and leads to a break and/or change of scenery being healthy options. Ultimately we got draft picks and Payton went to an out of conference team we rarely play, which was the ideal scenario.

It bummed me out he left and I wish he’d have stayed for his whole career, but Payton’s legacy in New Orleans is bigger than just him being HC. And it’ll live on it appears.
