So not that Smith was expected to light it up and make a difference, but this is devestating in that it strips us of yet another player at a critical position that is suffering some major injuries and losses. On top of that we lose veteran leadership.

This will be a tough year, and we must hope and pray that the Juniah/Tez combo stays healthy for 16 and plays top game.

Better now than later on. Injury bug to lb's unbelievable this year. Vacarro might have to play some lb. young Guys have played better than I expected, but it's a long season and veteran qb's will b licking their chops.

Me too......
I want to be excited because of how much of a liability he is on the field, but then I feel bad for the guy

It’ll be much harder for the Saints to install a 3-4 defense if they don’t have guys who can play.

Per a league source, linebacker Will Smith is out for the year with a knee injury suffered Sunday against the Texans.

The precise injury isn’t known, but for Saints fans it doesn’t matter. The first year of the Rob Ryan experiment will begin with both Victor Butler and Smith done for the duration.

The injury to Smith, a first-round pick in 2004 who was moving from defensive end in the 4-3 to outside linebacker in the 3-4, means that Martez Wilson will be asked to step up. Wilson returned to practice a couple of weeks ago after injuring an elbow early in camp.

The situation likely will prompt the Saints to keep an extra close eye on the waiver wire as teams cut to 53 players.

Then you're stupid. This is extremely bad for depth.

So all of a sudden Smith is a guy who was key in our switch to the 34?

Officially, he was.

I'm tired of reading how important and great he was.
He sucks.

This sucks for depth, but it might be good for our transition to the new guys who will be the future of the franchise. The era of Smith and Vilma is over. No point in delaying the inevitable.

I'm excited to see young blood get reps. Eric Martin, Rufus Johnson...you're up.

I would be shocked if we didn't pick up a vet off the waiver wire or make a small trade, though.

He was a bandaid at best. It does suck for depth, but Adkins and Richardson can do what he would have done.
