Had a highlight video of Atkins' career pop up on my YouTube feed. As the Voice of God, John Facenda, put it, "The Saints were hoping to get one good season out of him. Instead, they got three great ones."

How many of you old timers remember the Hall of Famer when he played in New Orleans?

Met him twice. First time coming out of the locker room at Tulane stadium he was heading to pre game warmups. Also my mother worked at RC Cola and some of the players worked there during the off-season. He was there for some kind of a Players appreciation thing. He was f..king huge. I was just a little kid but he was in the 6'7" -6'8" range.

He’s a Top 5 NFL defensive lineman of all time.

Possibly the GOAT.

He had the build of Davenport, but he also played with heart

I sold peanuts and soft drinks those first three seasons of the Saints. I was at a game in 1968 and saw him jump over an offensive lineman who had set himself for contact from Atkins. I think it was the Redskins. Got the sack and just acted like he did that every day!

Read a story in the Time Picayune a few years later that at one season training camp (in Hattiesburg?) he was aggravated by the noise some young players were making late in the evening in the dorm room directly above him. He pulled out a .38 and shot it through the ceiling. The noise stopped immediately!! (No one was hit.)

Doug Atkins: The Man Mountain. At least that is the name I seem to remember him being called.

Hell of a player. One year he won the Saints player of the year award, and received the free use of a VW Beetle for one year as the prize. He couldn't fit in the damn car.

The Tennessee man himself. I loved watching him play for the Saints. He was larger than life in stature and played like the legend he was.

Doud Atkins:
age: 37 9.5 sacks
age: 38 12.5 sacks
age: 39 8 sacks
Total of 30 sacks in 3 seasons at that age. wtf
