We're in a better leverage position for Sean Payton trade than people realize IMO...

After this weekend, there could be up to 5 suitors for Payton (currently 3).
SP is a Superbowl winning HC, offensive mind and program builder. This is a rare commodity in the NFL.
SP can list his preferred destinations and the Saints can agree or veto any per compensation.
I assume there is a lot of back-channel going on now. I know there is thought that Mickey will frick it up, but I hope he doesn't.

I have been saying this.
I can't believe people don't think a top 3 pick is worth getting one of the best coaches in the NFL. I just can't. There is high demand for his services. You absolutely should be expected to pay up for this kind of coach. Unless you need a franchise QB, I don't see how any draft pick is more valuable than a franchise changing coach with the detail and organization of Payton. Free agency still exists.

I'll go with Arizona if they match the rumor that Denver will pay him $20-25 million a season.

I think the chargers come in and get him. It’s a perfect match for both. It’s also probably the only missing piece from them being a legit title contender on that team currently. Could see them offering a ton of draft capital to get it done.

If they get destroyed in the first round and immediate fire the coach, maybe. But it’s such a risk to immediately fire stayley and hope you land Sean Payton. If they fire him, they’re running off a coach who got them to the playoffs, and you’re hoping that you get someone better than that in there.

I think the only potential block to it would be trade compensation to the saints. I don’t see how Payton isn’t immediately on board with going there. If you watch the chargers it’s clear they’re successful in spite of Staley not because of him.

Payton could say I only want to coach X team. And Saints say nope, not unless they give us what we want to make it work.

I would still rather have him but that’s not going to happen clearly so we take the highest offer regardless of what Sean prefers. This single trade will be the cornerstone to the Saints rebuild and we have to hit on it. A 1st in 2023 and a 2nd in 2024 is what I would ask for.

I think if SD opens up we’d have them by the balls, Payton will want that one badly. You call his bluff on returning to TV and thinking a better opportunity presents itself next season

Spot on, there’s many suitors to drive the price up and he’s one of the best HC of the past 20 years.
Payton would be perhaps the BEST coach to ever be traded at the time of the trade. The only other one really in the discussion, ironically, is Parcells. Yes, Belichick was traded but it was to NE before he was the SB-winning coach he became. Payton already has that and a legacy as one of the best offensive minds in the game.
We should demand a king’s ransom, and we’ll get it if we do.

The problem is, Loomis is the one making the deal. He’s going to see ONE 1st round pick and drool so much that he loses leverage for 2 or many picks in multiple rounds. He isn’t patient enough to create a bidding war.
And Sean is his friend, so he won’t be able to separate that from the business of making the best deal with only the Saints in mind.
If Sean publicly expresses a destination of choice, Loomis will simply take what they offer over forcing Payton to sit on the sideline for 1 or 2 more years.

It’s hard to view Staley as anything other than an anchor on that team. He’s cost them numerous games with phenomenally stupid in game decisions and wasted one of the 3 or 4 most talented rosters in the league. They need to get rid of Staley even if they don’t get Payton.
