We really set ourselves back with the 2020 Draft

A fault of Payton was his impatience and obvious frustration when things weren't status quo. This was very obvious during the 2020 draft when the Saints left the draft with 4 selections.
At the time, we applauded the idea of getting at least 3 immediate contributors to a team where many roster spots were already claimed.
But the draft isn't intended for the immediate. It's for the future of your team. It builds depth in addition to producing top contributors. And
did we mess up.
Pick 24: Cesar Ruiz - C
Nothing to say here other than he's been awful. A complete miss. The only starter to not miss time last year and he was worse than the various backups.
The Pick Blessed with Hindsight: Brandon Aiyuk - WR
Pick 74: Zack Baun - LB
We traded a future 3rd for a player who is basically a special teamer. Flashed in the pre-season and then whiffed when the actual games started.
The Pick Blessed with Hindsight: Jonah Jackson - OG
Pick 105: Adam Trautman - TE
Trautman looked lost for most of the year but then came on strong. The lights seemed to finally come on for him, and of course he then got hurt. He's the only player who may have potential from this class, but we traded 4 picks for him.
The Pick Blessed with Hindsight: Trautman. I don't hate the selection but what we gave up sacrificed depth for this team.
Pick 240: Tommy Stevens - QB
Payton showed his disdain for draft picks by trolling one of his former employees by wasting a future pick (a measly 6th) just to take a player who would end up being cut.
The Pick Blessed with Hindsight: Whatever BPA who could have maybe played special teams or actually had a shot at making the team.
Picks we traded for Trautman and who was selected:
#130 - James Lynch, DT (currently with Vikings)
#169 - Harrison Hand, CB (currently with Vikings)
#203 - Blake Brandel, OT (currently with Vikings)
#244 - Nate Stanley, QB (currently with Vikings)
Now this isn't to praise any of these Vikings picks as "can't miss", but the depth at DT, CB, and OT sure would have been nice.

The philosophy wasn’t wrong at the time, especially considered what happened in 2018, but the execution was rather terrible.

Agree totally. We needed to nail those picks and we might be 0/3 when all is said and done.

Baun was a great pick based on his potential, as was Trautman. Ruiz was the biggest reach, but Payton really hated Warford.

You cant judge a draft class 2 seasons later, especially one where the rookies didnt get their OTA

And have done about what 3rd round picks do. Saints only play two LBs, there isnt a full time slot for Baun. It would help to settle him in at a position. At worst his will just backup multiple spots, and Trautman will play the Josh Hill role when we get another solid TE. The rub is always the unrealistic expectations our idiot fans put on 3rd rd picks - of course they’ll be disappointed

Proven to be the best pass protecting C in CFB at Michigan, let’s move him to guard in the NFL. The silver lining is he’s the 2nd youngest guy on the team while having two tough, learning years in the league already. Book isn’t written on him. Let’s see what Marrone can do with him

I liked the Baun and Trautman picks for where they were selected. Trautman has already shown much more than the tight ends picked ahead of him including the two BB took for the patriots.
I liked Baun in the draft and I said this in the draft threads but I saw him strictly as a 3-4 outside backer. I thought he had some pass rushing ability so I liked the pick for that reason, but think he is just out of place in our defense….

Ruiz felt like a reaction to the fact that the middle of our line was constantly getting destroyed, especially in the playoff losses. Brees was always susceptible to pressure up the middle.
Ruiz was a good pick but in hindsight Aiyuk would have been a lot better

This is why I’ve said on here 100 times that Sean Payton is terrible at the draft. His philosophy is the opposite of what it should be. We should be trading back and accumulating more draft choices instead of trading up for “can’t miss” prospects who often turn out to be terrible.

I've always heard 3 years is the sweet spot, but with Ruiz and Baun the writing appears to be on the wall.

If you look at Payton's drafting he only ever hit on two drafts, 2006 and 2017. He wasted a ton of picks on bullshite players. That's why a lot of his rosters consisted of undrafted guys. But the recent trades and drafting of project guys like Peat, Turner, and Ruiz take the cake. Davenport was in there too for a while but has proven a good pick when healthy.

Baun has looked horrible at both linebacker spots.
They literally drafted pete werner cause he was bad.

Chalks it’s always a tough lesson for you and the jump to conclusions krewe. Like there is enough sample size to judge anything Baun has done. Yeah, he ain’t starting over the likes of Davis, Kwon, Werner. Those guys are born and bred backers

Hendrickson had 6.5 sacks through his first three seasons. People though Davenport was a bust. On the flip, people like Zombie thought Stephone Anthony was a guy after one season. One day people of your ilk will learn to let things materialize a bit before crowning something either way

What about Ruiz? There’s an entire season worth of film that shows him getting treated like a turnstile.
And as for Baun…the dude can’t even sniff playing time and it’s not because of the great competition ahead of him. Now I’ll agree with many that he needs to rush the passer but the saints, for whatever reason, just don’t agree with that. It doesn’t matter because he won’t be on the team in another 2 years.

Link to this? I mean sure I’m all for giving rookies a year to find their game but after year 2 you should be trending upward. Ruiz and Baun, and hell even Trautman, aren’t doing that.

Well Davenport isn’t a bust. No where close. He’s a monster. But…he’s never healthy. Like ever. Nagging injuries that sideline him for weeks and weeks. Saints have a tough decision after this next year and I’m glad we picked up his option.

Yeah it’s absolutely what happened. They realized they traded up for a special teamer and needed to grab a better young linebacker to groom.
