We pushed the poker chips in and made a huge bet

on a talent we believe immediately makes us a better D. Look at what was there at 27, there was nothing there with the potential to make us immediately better.
Davenport doesn’t need to be an every down DE next season to make us better, if he can just do what comes natural to him and get after the passer, our D is elite.
Spent some capital but guys with his potential aren’t available in the bottom half of round 1. After essentially getting 4 first rounders last draft, we can afford the gamble.

I guess it's hard not to give Ireland the benefit of the doubt.
Bitching about it now does no good.

Totally agreed.
No one was there to move the needle at 27. Seems as though the saints knew that would be the case, identified their guy, and got him.

Exactly

My only concern really is: how fast can he contribute? Because you can’t make this move unless you expect immediate dividends. And the biggest knock on this guy was how raw he is having played at a small school with worse coaching against bad competition. So they must be confident they can coach him up fast. If he isn’t an immediate contributor it’s a big miss considering what we gave up and the position we’re In now.

This pick told me that the organization believes they are extremely close to a Lombardi and that they are all in for the next two years.

I disagree. I think we could’ve gotten one of the best OL in the draft in Hernandez. Which I think is a crucial need but hey, what do I know.

The tape tells me he can get by on athleticism and hustle even if the technique isn’t there right away
He’s blowing guys up on film, putting O tackles in the dirt, forcing fumbles etc. Then you say well it’s inferior competition but he’s also beating the power 5 OTs. Then his combine and senior bowl performance basically cement that this dude is a god damn king cobra

We have a great d-line coach and one of the best pass rushers in the league so I think he's in a perfect scenario.
I like that this FO realized their primary need and answered it. Plus in hindsight like a few have mentioned, it was barren at 27 so it worked out

I'm pretty excited about the D-line now.
what's even more encouraging is that the D-line showed a lot of improvement last year without long time gopher Bill Johnson on the sidelines.

Amen.
This kid’s upside is insane. Prove the haters wrong.

Here’s how I look at it... think of Evan Ingram last year, tyoicallly TEs don’t contribute early....but since he was really only asked to do what he does best, catch passes and not worry about blocking, he excelled.
We really only need Davenport to use his elite athleticism to rush the passer on limited snaps, he does that and we’re an elite D. Pricey? Yeah but how else do you think we were going to improve that glaring weakness between now and September?

We better have better DL coaches than UTSA
Terron Armstead was supposed to be insanely raw when we drafted him and he was starting and playing at an All Pro level by midseason his rookie year.
Also as long as Okafor is healthy and near that 100% mark we can ease Davenport in as the coaches deem him ready.
Most of the reports out of UTSA from his coaches is that he is a really hard worker.
I would expect him to maybe play a similar role to what Will Smith did his rookie year when we had Howard and Grant. Regardless I am very amped about the pick and cant wait to see what he can do.
Also with our DT's entering their prime now I am very excited to see what these guys will all look like together.

You obviously don’t know much bc our OL is set.

and there wasnt much at 27 that would be a player people would have faith in making an immediate impact

I'm fine with it. Kid seems like a beast.
Besides, we're gonna trade Ingram next offseason and get that first rounder right back... amirite?

Pass rushers with his upside are probably the 2nd most coveted position outside of QB. The capital we spent is easily worth it if he’s that guy
Posted on 4/26/18 at 11:30 pm to BilJ
If we stay healthy on D, we are going to be pretty legit on both sides of the ball
Posted on 4/26/18 at 11:32 pm to Rand AlThor
It depends on what you think is contributing. I see at least 6 sacks and maybe 10 if he gets bigger and stronger. By no means is he really ready to handle 3 down play throughout the course of the season. I think he spot plays early and makes a few sacks here or there and then later in the season he turns it on as he gets better with technique and play strength and he adjusts.
He will start by Year 2. Bank on it. He will be an effective pass rusher for us his first year but he might not be a full time starter until Year 2
ETA: And like BilJ said, freaks of nature like Davenport are extremely coveted and there’s risk to drafting a player like that. There was risk when the Lions did it with Ziggy and other players. It costed us a lot, yes, but it’s better to try and make something happen and try to get that game changer, even if you swing and miss, than sit on your arse and draft a player that doesn’t really move the needle for us.
