re: We just traded a top tier player for less than compensatory value if lost in FA

Weird because almost everything the Saints have done to this point indicates they were pushing towards a run this year.
We overpaid big for Olave, and then just traded him to the Eagles for a ham sandwich while they still have our 1st and 3rd next year and our 4th in 2024 if memory serves.
Maybe the Saints are finally realizing that they’re not winning anything with Winston and making a push with him as QB despite the roster is futile.

This could be a one year rental to try and make a run.
This would make it 1000x worse, because we'd have gotten more compensation with him as a "one year rental"

What does Payton have to do with the move? frick him

The coaches wanted him gone, so he’s gone. That seems to be what the boils down to.

Does cutting Taysom at some point save a boatload of $$?

Chauncey been balling out.
Would of liked to see him play safety for a year and prove his worth there.

this would never happen under Payton.

Payton would have done something equally as stupid.
If he were here, Michael Thomas would have been traded for peanuts.

Yes. I'm sure that's it

Maybe my memory is shot, but I don't recall any lopsided trades like this under Payton. I am genuinely open to be corrected here though. Didn't we get Unger and a 1st for Graham when he was a malcontent?

Mostly just lopsided contracts

Graham was a pro bowler and possibly the best TE in the league at the time. CJGJ isn't on Graham's level

And losing him on the field for a year in the meantime.
Terrible.

That's not the same thing as this

I see you failed to miss my point. I'm not saying CGJ is a 1st round worthy trade, but he is someone you don't trade for a sick horse and rotten hay. I am saying that under Payton they didn't just give players away; they made sure they received proper value in return.
What we have here is a trade that has 2 winners and one big loser, and the Saints are definitely the big loser. Chad is 100% correct that we do better holding him for a year, forcing him to either hold out or play (just as every other team does) and then receiving a higher comp pick next year when he walks.

Was it a guarantee compensatory pick for next year if he left?
Nope. One decent free agent signing and the comp pick is wiped away. Unless the saints planned on signing no free agents in the offseason there is no guarantee on comp picks

They must have wanted him gone ASAP, so it was this or release him I guess.

This trade was BEYOND horrible for so many reasons.
We are in win now mode.
I would rather have CGJ sit all year than play for the Eagles -a team we play this year (and has beaten us the past 2 years).
No way AT is better than CGJ this year. No way.
The compensation is just awful. Basically no compensation.
Also I believe that when the games started & we start winning the competitive nature of CGJ would have taken over.
This has to be one of the worst trades ever.
