Well that’s interesting.

Could be useful. Won’t be expensive. Do what you do Sean.

This would be a legitimate "prove it" deal and I'm all about it

Is this one of those cases where we check him out and sign him much later if we don't like what we see from what we have in camp? Also, I remember hearing that we probably won't sign a RB b4 the start of the season because if they're on the roster day 1, the whole contract is guaranteed.

good luck trying to break into this RB room. After injuries and only 152 carries in the past three years you hafta wonder how much gas is left.

What kicks these old vets too is the minimum salary. It's over $1mil for Charles now. He might be a #4-5 good Kamara-like back up but not for $1mil+. Also a Trey Edmunds might have more special teams value at nearly half the price this year ($555K). I bet a lot of older guys would waive those minimums if it meant a check coming in.

Is this an indication that they aren't liking what they are seeing from Scott or Edmunds?

Good point...
I was hoping we didn’t need to bring anyone in.
Nothing wrong with kicking tires though.

It might be too early to assume that. Probably just seeing if they can get a few more legit snaps from a player on his last leg. Cheap contract as well. It's not like Charles is any kind of risk with his cheap price tag.

Triplett:

Sean Payton didn't specifically confirm that veteran RB Jamaal Charles is scheduled to visit the Saints on Wednesday. But when asked about Tim Hightower's three-day tryout during veteran minicamp and Charles' reported visit, Payton said, "If we work anyone out here in the next few days, it would be just to see what kind of shape they're in, see how they're doing. It doesn't preclude us from signing someone, but it's pretty normal." Payton said earlier this offseason that the Saints didn't immediately plan to sign a veteran RB to fill in during Mark Ingram's four-game suspension. But that does increase the need to have an updated "short list" at the position.

Here are the top remaining F.A. RB's according to Rotoworld...still a few decent options for cheap. I assume DeMarco Murray is the only guy looking for starter money.

Running Backs(14)
DeMarco Murray (30), Alfred Morris (29), Adrian Peterson (33), Orleans Darkwa (26), Terrance West (27), Shane Vereen (29), Andre Ellington (29), Jamaal Charles (31), Branden Oliver (26), Eddie Lacy (27), Cedric Peerman (31), Jordan Todman (28), Lance Dunbar (28), Mike James (26)

It's almost a given they bring a veteran in, at least during Ingrams suspension

not necessarily at this point. There's 4 very capable guys already on the roster with Kamara, Williams, Scott, Edmunds. Obviously they want to keep a nice little updated file on available guys if needed as we move forward.

There's 1 capable guy at this point.

We don't want Edmonds taking carries

Scott will be inactive or PS early on.

Williams should make the team but we'll still need a 3rd guy

He could end up being a good addition. He's probably at the very top of the cheap tier (he & AP).

Murray is way too expensive & Alfred Morris will probably be more than veteran league minimum. Orleans Darkwa is still recovering from an injury as well.

If I had to choose from: Tim Hightower, Jamaal Charles, & Terrance West...I'd probably go with West. Youngest & fewest big injuries.

Got a raw deal in both Washington and Dallas. I think he's still a quality back

Yea, I think Morris & West are the safest bets available. Obviously, I'm not counting Murray.

West will probably be cheaper though.

What makes you think we have 4 capable guys?

We have 1 proven back as of now. We could use a veteran presence for 4 games. Someone cheap of course
