The New Orleans Saints knew exactly what they were doing taking Rick Leonard (OT, FSU) in the 4th round because I spoke to a couple teams today who told me they definitely would have taken him in the 5th round if he was still there.

So we got a 5th round talent in the 4th?

19 reps bench press at combine. Projected Free Agent before draft. Only 2 years playing position.

I don't understand the pick

He still new to the position, still learning. We have a great group of linemen who can help mentor him. We need him to become a serviceable backup, not come in and start right away.

I’m not crazy about the pick. But I trust the staff after he previous draft

Well he clearly wasn’t a projected free agent

The point is, he had some buzz about him within the front offices. Obviously a lot more than any fan.

We picked at the end of the round, so that seems about right.

Remember, when we drafted this raw prospect out of no where that everyone said we reached for a guy who we could have picked up as an UDFA.

The profile you linked says Round 5. We took him late 4. The exact same writer for NFL.com had Leonard undrafted. We took him late 4...

Can you believe the stupid Saints traded a second round pick and a seventh round pick last year for a backup Tennessee running back?

^this. You can't teach side and athleticism. Hopefully they can hold him the way they did Armstead. I'm choosing to have faith after the last 2 drafts.

I appreciate responses like yours here. We need OL depth and he at least has things you can't teach that work. So with any pick it's on the staff to develop his skill set and it's on him to work at developing his knowledge and skill. Most 4th round picks need to be developed. The staff has earned my trust.

That’s what Payton said as well. Great physically and looked good down the stretch of last year. FWIW FSU fans/bloggers/etc said he’s horrible but I’m sure they’re just salty from his early days

He didn’t participate in the combine (except bench) and had one private workout. 3 guesses which team did the private workout.

I’m not saying the guy is going to be a beast, but we churn out offensive linemen like we churn out RBs and WRs. There was something in that workout and interview that made this team think he would be special. Only time will tell if the Saints were right, but if history is an indicator, Leonard is going to be a good one.

Here's the thing. These people rating the picks and determining who is drafted/undrafted, round X, are all prognosticators using things like the combine and pro-days to sell things.

Sometimes guys fall through the cracks that are injured, overlooked, or just aren't great combine warriors.

This is very much like the high school 5* prospect that busts versus the 2* prospect that flourishes. Hell, the #1 pick in this draft was initially a walk-on to both teams he played for in college, and no one questions his drafting in the top 2 rounds.

It's all about exposure. Maybe they brought the kid in for a workout, loved what they saw and guaranteed him they'd take him in the 4th if he didn't go to other places. So with the lack of exposure, he seems like a poor prospect.

The Saints have taken quite a few oline men in the mid to late rounds I can only think of one true bust. I trust them with oline men

We picked late 4th. Are we really going to complain about a 10-15 spot "overpay" on a guy we haven't seen in action yet?

Some of you flip your shite about the silliest things.

Yes. Because people even complain about 7th round picks and UDFA that 9/10 times don't even make the roster.

Yes, Leonard and the RB from LA Tech are the only 2 picks I questioned. The pick that will surprise IMO is CB Jamerson in the 5th rd. I think he's a bad arse player. Great speed, the instinct for blitzing and coverage with great ST skills.
