Benson bought the Saints for $70.2 million in 1985. Now, the franchise is worth roughly $2B. If you find a better ROR than 28,000% in 30 years, I'd love to hear it.

'd heard stories that Rita apparently became a nightmare after the resurgence of the team with Payton, Brees and Bush. She was a more and more frequent sight in the New Orleans social scene and her behavior at Saints offices became erratic and explosive.
She went through dozens of personal assistants, had a short fuse and was apparently a pretty vicious and unpleasant person. She seemed more interested in being known as an NFL owner than actually doing the duties of an NFL owner. Payton and Loomis didn't hide their distrust and disdain for her.
All that was second and third and I have no way to verify any of it, but it meshes with several narratives I heard play out between 2006 and the season she was excommunicated from the franchise.

What about a Brees/Manning group in about five to ten years? In 1985, Benson did not own but a 50% share. He bought out his group later.

It’s incredible what she threw away. Not just 2 billion dollar sports teams but she was going to be a superstar, like the female Mark Cuban.

I’ve met Gayle and Tom about 6 years ago. Gayle was surprisingly down to earth and very nice. So was Tom. You would never know they were billionaires.

I assume that upon her death, Gayle's estate only gets 50% of the teams. The other 50% goes to The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, unless she dies within 6 months of his death, then the entirety goes to the Foundation per his will.
That is how he set up the Gayle Benson Marital Trust if the Tom Benson July 2015 Revocable Trust was not in existence at his death. So I assume the July 2015 Trust has the same conditions.

You would still need a majority owner and anyone with that amount of cash would probably just purchase the entire team.
Gayle is 67 and seems to be in good health. Lets say she lives another 20 years, by that time the Chouest fortune (the only other Louisiana native that could afford them) will have been diluted to the kids and multiple grandkids. At some point, we will have a majority owner who is not from Louisiana.

None of Tom Benson's "progeny" have any biological relationship to him. He and his first wife could not have children, and they adopted three kids.
Rita Benson LeBlanc is his granddaughter; daughter of Benson's (adopted) daughter Renee (who incidentally is the only one of Benson's three adopted kids that is still alive).

My wife's client worked with Gayle before she married Tom. Knew her for a long time and said she was a very sweet, honest, down-to-earth woman who was already successful before Tom. Ran her own business but didn't come from money.
My mom knows Gayles ex-husband. Total drug addict piece of shite, psychopath. Wife's client verified this and said that wifing Tom Benson couldn't have happened to a better person than Gayle after what she has been through.
