This is why you never pay huge contracts to WR or RB

You pay big money to OL, DL and QB and the the truly special shutdown corners or all pro LBs. Offensive skill positions are just too volatile and they are too easy to find in the draft to pay $100 million for and saddle your team’s financial future. I love Olave but unless he just goes nuts 3 years straight I’m either trying to sign him early for a lower amount contract but that would give him financial security sooner like some baseball players do or I’m looking to trade him one year early for a solid return then rinse and repeat every 3-4 years. The Thomas contract is going to be talked about in time with the Albert Haynesworth contract. Kamara is actually playing up to his contract but there’s no chance I give him another big deal heading toward 30 years old. I think this is about to be a league wide practice whereas it’s just RB getting lowballed but I believe WR and to an extent TE might also go down that slope soon. The game is still won on the lines and at QB.

I think it’d be best for everyone if we traded Mr. Glass. It just needs a reset.

It’s not possible. We would pay a team more for him to play for them than we would to just keep him and hope he gets healthy eventually. That’s what kicking the can down the road does. It screws us in situations like this where we can’t move on from players like Thomas.

Other than current injuries that had never been a huge issue with him in the past, Michael Thomas was more than earning his contract the year after he signed, breaking NFL records and all.

He’s barely played in 3 years and he’s 30 this off-season. No way you can spin things to make this a good situation. All foot/ankle injuries too which is death for a skill player. The only glimmer of hope was speed was never his game anyway and he basically only runs slant routes. But we are paying $100 million for a slant route only WR that never plays. He also had a hall of fame QB that year he broke those records.

I agree with this. Honestly I’d get as much as I can out of the player and then either let them walk on free agency or trade them away when they’re in their final year (or close to it).

Receivers and runningbacks are coming into the NFL ready to plays and it’s not worth paying huge money for these types of players.

Can't trade a player on IR.

ETA: I think this has been changed actually

Indeed. His dead cap after this season is 25 mil, 13 mil after 2023. May just have to stick it out with him unfortunately...

Mike D made a good point about him. He does not want to go under the knife and this is the second year in a row where he delayed surgery to try to rehab it and not have it work. He was probably told at the beginning of this that he needed surgery and it would take 6-8 weeks to recover, and he opted not to do it.

You're getting upvoted by the exact same people who were downvoting this 3 years ago. Saints fans sure are are a fickle, reactionary bunch.

Regardless of how you feel we were playing for a Super Bowl during the time we signed Thomas and it had to be done. Yes we are dealing with the repercussions but at least there are no what ifs. If you have a window especially one that is closing for a Super Bowl. You have to be all in.

I didn't mean this season. Trade deadline has past. It would be cheaper after this season.

Don't think Froman was arguing against this point. I believe he was talking about at the time of the contract extension (and the year after) there were no huge issues. Hell, didn't the whole Brees/Thomas fiasco happen after the contract?

This is dumb. Wr’s aren’t that easy to find, especially great wr’s, which he was. You can’t predict injuries. This is in no way the same as paying for rb’s. You think Miami regrets paying Hill? GB tried giving Adams all the money.

Problem is, he is scheduled for a $28M cap hit in a season when we're already ~$58M over. If you trade him, you only save $3M, and have to eat $25M in dead money. Because of how far over the team is, they will need to restructure his contract to turn his salary into a bonus to push the money down the road. Then he becomes more difficult to trade in 2024.

The salary cap manipulation techniques are coming to bite this team in the arse big time.

I find it crazy how someone could argue NOT paying an elite WR. Look at what Rodgers is dealing with right now and Brees at the end of his career.

I think the plan is/was to keep shuffling into about 2027 when things start to slide. Barring any restructuring, only 4 mill in dead money next year, 0 in 2025.

Also, if we trade MT after the season but pre-June 1 we shave about 3 million off the cap, if we trade him post-June 1 we shave 20 Mil off the cap. I think if we can find a buyer, it would be a good trade for us.

I'm sure you will see some restructuring again and push some dead money to 2025/2026 to try to open up the cap space. And, there is also always hope revenues go up thus increasing the cap limit.

We shall see.
