There was a method to the Saints’ draft madness. Really.

The Saints are drafting now with player learning methods at the forefront. Head coach Sean Payton believes players’ learning methods cross section in four ways — never struggles in education and in football learning; never struggles in education but struggles in football learning; struggles in education but never in football; struggles in both. He calls it good-good, good-bad, bad-good and bad-bad. He is fascinated in gauging the mental side of young players.

”I was surprised when we first met at the Senior Bowl that they had me learn some of their stuff on defense. And then when I saw them again later in the draft process, they asked me about it and I remembered most of it.”

He spoke their language.

He nailed one of their biggest, developing draft metrics.

TL;DR - CSP talks about how we've been approaching prospects and drafting from a prospective of learning styles. Marcus Davenport was identified as a target because of his ability to adapt and learn quickly.

I've discussed on here before how it seems we've taken a much more obvious leaning to intelligent, well-spoken, high IQ type guys. Here it is in writing.

That also test well physically and have performed well on the field. Hence, the early success. It's a solid philosophy to ID the right players and draft them. If the team is able to hit on a higher % of it's draft selections compared to the AVG NFL Team, then it is ok to use picks to move up to take a player that ID as a special fit.

That's the first insight that has made any sense of their draft for me.

Stephone Anthony deserves some of the credit for the development of this method

He talked about it A LOT last year about how intelligent this player or that player was. Like a shite ton.

He didn't lay out the method last year, but you could tell last year and this year he was looking for guys that were smart and football smart.

Last year was perhaps a litmus test to see how well the process could work, and it REALLY fricking worked.

If the same happens here with this draft (albeit the talent level isn't going to be as high based on where we picked last year vs. this year) then they really have something.

Perhaps that's why they valued the number of picks they had so much, because they want to gather as much data as they can on this process.

I had no idea Sean Payton had Glaucoma.

Seems like the last two classes this method was probably in place. Picks like Hendrickson and Onyemata who have shown tremendous value and maturity quickly.

I have hope for the Leonard pick for this reason, he's obviously "raw" but athletic enough to play DE for a national contender - his brain might make for a steal.

The Saints website did player interviews over the phone shortly after each selection. It was amazing to see how similar each of the selections described themselves. Team first, hard worker, whatever way I can contribute to help the team...and each one of them very well spoken.

He became their target. An edge rusher, a primary need the Saints identified after last season. An effort player. A fortunate product of availability when NFL teams’ franchise quarterback needs early in the draft pushed him downward toward the middle of the first round. An explosive player. An aggressive player.

And here is the real key — a guy who fits right in with what the Saints are building in terms of talent mixed with mental temperament and learning makeup.

It’s almost like they know the players better than fans and our local hack reporters

I also think it is interesting, when speaking about building a profile of a player, that both Ireland and Payton referenced twp parent households as a part of what they look for with a player. I wonder how many of our draft picks, this year and last, fit this criteria.

What is telling in Payton's approach is that there is no way Lamar Jackson was going to be the pick. Intelligence and Lamar Jackson do not go together.

Also it makes sense since after the superbowl, it seems Payton and Loomis started grabbing talented players that did not have the smarts to back it up (cough...Junior...cough).

I think they also looked back at their most successful acquisitions over those time frames and searched for a pattern.

Think about the guys that worked out most of the time, and intelligence and work ethic were pretty big keys to the 2006 draft class as well.

Evan, Colston, Harper, Strief were all intelligent players with good heads on their shoulders while maybe not the most physically extreme players.

In the end, its a great approach and I think will pay dividends.

Come on Gyno, don’t you think the poster “L.A.” has a pretty dynamic scouting system that would outweigh any system the Saints are using?

Weve come a long way since Stanley Jean Baptiste.
