Sources: The #Lions and Matthew Stafford have mutually agreed to part ways this offseason and the team will begin exploring trade options in the coming weeks for their star QB.

In my opinion Stafford would be a fantastic option for the Saints after Brees. Pro bowl QB who never played on a good team due to Lions incompetence.

Maybe Dan Campbell does us a solid.

Michael Thomas liked this on Twitter, fwiw.

He's have to agree to a restructured deal for us to have any chance

Don’t think it’ll happen. We’d have to give up a lot and are in a cap crunch.

But man that would be awesome

Loomis laughs at this “cap crunch”

Maybe Campbell would use Taysom. Package it with a 1st a 3rd, and next year's 2nd.

$33M cap hit??

We would have to extend him. Not sure I want to do that

Matthew Stafford contract notes:
* Currently signed through 2022
* Due base salaries of $9.5M in 2021 and $12.5M in 2022
* Has $10M roster bonuses and $500K workout bonuses in each year
* Cap hits for the acquiring team would be $20M in 2021 and $23M in 2022

Can they restructure his contract and then trade him? We'd have to add in a pick to have them do it I'm sure

It would essentially make his cap hit for us like 1.5mil.

It’s a no brainer to keep the elite level of play they’ve had last 5 years. He’s made his money he needs to go to someone who can get to SB in next few years.

Help me understand. Sportrac has the cap hit at $33M. I thought a trade didn’t accelerate dead money?
