It's not him, it wasn't Gibbs, it wasn't venturi, it wasn't Williams. Haslett and Payton have both been abysmal at drafting defensive players. Payton just happens to be an elite coach and knows offensive talent. Plus we have this guy named drew brees.

we don't have much talent to mold on defense right now. outside of lofton, our LBs are slow. our strong safety sucks dick in coverage. our only pass rushers are converted LBs learning DE. our DTs aren't good

what kind of scheme could this team run?

Last yr with the same amount of talent we weren't the worst statistical defense in NFL history, much less in the NFL. I understand this the D has little talent and the offense isn't as good to help mask our defensive problems. But, It has start falling on Spags shoulders. There is no way it should be the worst D in history. He's getting to much of a pass and the d is making little to no improvements.

Do you think he really might not be as good as we thought he was or anybody thought? It's possible, he rode the coat tail of one of the greatest Dlines in NY (maybe its possible he made them better), but then he went to St Louis to be head coach and his defenses were subpar.

Look its hard to judge until he has his players in, but this D has gotten worse and there has been no improvement.

The players on this team are bad. But I have a hard time believing they are this bad. We could run a 4-3 base defensive play every play and should do better than we are doing right now. This defense is pathetic. Simply pathetic.

I agree.

The entire D needs to be cut except for Cam, Hicks, Martez, Loston, Greer, and maybe keep Jenkins. Spags needs a D line that can get some pressure for his system to work. The only reason why our D looked ok at times under Gregg was because of the ridiculous amount of blitzing he does. Which is also the reason why our secondary would get gashed so much (i.e. getting shredded by freakin alex smith and vernon davis last year).

We lost Tracy porter, that's a huge loss. I think people don't understand that we do not have NFL players on defense. Greer is the 3rd corner on any other team. Jenkins, Harper, robinson, white, shanle. These guys don't go on the field on any other team in the league, some of them wouldn't even make other teams.

We've been blaming coaching for 10 years. It's the talent.

I'd tell Spags to take the rest of the year off and just scout college ball. Bring in your guys PLEASE!!!

OK, go ahead and fire Spags. See if the D improves. It will not.

It's not the DC.

lol wut?? we essentially had to play about 6 games a year without him, every year…. how is Porter a "huge" loss?

sure, he's miles better than Robinson, but at this point, i'd put a fricking can of unsalted peanuts out there at CB and take my chances rather than PRob….

I am not sure he deserves all of the blame, and like most of the other responses, the players are really not very good. However, if the players you have clearly are not capable of running the scheme you want to employ, shouldn't you adjust to the personnell you do have? At least with Williams attacking style, he was able to cover up many of the weaknesses on this team. For as many times as they would get beat, they would make just as many good plays. This current defense just gets beat.

Made big plays for us and was decent in coverage. Honestly I didn't think he was that big of a loss until tonight.

I'm still shaking my head at PRob being a 1st rounder. EVERYONE was taken aback by that pick, but we had faith that Loomis knew what he was doing. I'm tired of us drafting margin players for D, waiting for "potential" to bloom.

Mickey Loomis is not a good evaluator of NFL talent. He has not earned his paycheck since 2009.

But, Benson will never fire him.

The LB situation makes no sense to me. WTF is Vilma doing playing OLB? You can't tell me that Martez isn't a better option at that spot. Vilma along with Smith and Harper need to be the first people shown the door this offseason.

Serious question here, does he need to be handed the pink slip at the mid season point? It can't be any worse with anyone else.

This is a legitimate question. Obviously talent is a big part of the equation, but as untalented as we are, we are still underperforming relative to the talent.

This defense is ridiculously bad...historically bad.

I was hoping we would get Daryl Washington. I think Fujita had already been signed by Cleveland. I guess they were hell bent on moving Jenkins to free safety and felt that cornerback was a more pressing need.

The offense is underperforming as well. Get rid of PC?
