Should the Saints retire #57?

I'm an old geezer and I hate seeing players wear #57 especially but also #51 #7 and even #77.
INB4 ya can't retire all the numbers dumbass.
ETA: after a little digging it seems the Saints only have two retired numbers from the Mecom debacle I mean ownership.
#81 - Doug Atkins
#31 - Jim Taylor
Officially the New Orleans Saints no longer retire jersey numbers. (though some are not made available i.e. #8 and I would assume #9)

The issue I have with #7 is he played as many years with other teams as he did with the Saints. Hell, his stats were actually slightly better when he played elsewhere
I like the idea for the other 3, but you would also need to include #9 in that group, as most of their career was with the Saints and they are in the HoF.

iirc the only official retires numbers for the Saints are #31 Jim Taylor and #81 Doug Atkins. While #8 & #9 aren't actually retired it's pretty much off limits from what I understand.
Tend to agree with you on #7, plus he played for the Falcons. .
but even so the ole Great Dane always loved New Orleans and never as far as I remember talked crap about the city or Saints even after getting lowballed on his contract offer which lead to him leaving.

I think you have to be more picky when retiring numbers. I’d say we retire #9 and that’s it at the moment.
57, 7, 77, 26 & 94 can go into the Saints HOF and ring of honor. But not retired.

The Saints do not officially retire numbers. 31 and 81 have been unretired and issued. The Saints officially honor former players using the ring of honor.
The equipment staff, on their own authority, refuse to issue #'s 8 and 9, but those numbers are not retired and could be issued if future staffers in the equipment department choose not to continue this tradition.
The NFL has asked teams not to retire numbers but they can if they want.

No it’s not. Retiring numbers is stupid. If you retire a number, that’s it, it’s done. But just because it’s not retired doesn’t mean they have to dole out 57 to every scrub that wants to wear it.

I understand why the Packers would retire 31 for Jim Taylor but why would the Saints? How long did he actually play for the Saints and what did he do?

The only one that I don’t want to see anyone else wear is #9.
Atkins 81 and Taylor 31 were two of the NFLs all time greats but they were washed up by the time they got here.

It was a big deal back in 1967 that both Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung were to join the Saints. Of course Hornung was too injured to ever play and Taylor only lasted 1 season.
