Wouldn’t we have gotten a 3rd round comp pick just letting him walk next year?

People will tell you yes, but those picks are based on FA moves so no one actually knows.

This was stupid if you didn't want to re sign him fine, but you could have got another year of service out of him rather then a 5/6 round pick.
Unless he was going to be a malcontent, this was a bad decision

They aren’t. They’re both better safeties than CGJ. His loss will be felt in the slot, but Mathieu can still cover there unless he’s lost another step.

The secondary will be fine.

This isn't about 2022

This is about 2023-2026

I mean, I wouldn’t go that far. But CGJ was more important as a vocal presence (before this year) rather than as an important chess piece. But he wasn’t some scrub either. He was above average in coverage (not elite like Kenny Moore from the Colts) but he made some nice plays in the run game. I hope Alontae can come along quickly because I just don’t think Roby will do well in the slot

Both safety spots opened up and they went and signed guys to fill them. That’s pretty much them admitting they didn’t think he was up to the task.

I don't think the signings only indicate this. It seems that this pure safety talk is directly related to his contract demands. I imagine they didn't do due diligence in preparing themselves for the extension talks and signed 2 old safeties assuming CGJ would maintain his role

Allen must know enough that he didn't want him starting at safety for the future. But was willing to keep him at nickel.

The eagles probably told the saints that they have to give him a next contract.

Anything less than a 4th is bad.

That sounds right.

It could be what the Saints wanted, a 4th.

I hope they at least took a swing at that

how tf is a starting NFL safety just entering his prime and a 7th only worth a 5th and a 6th?!

draft picks are so overvalued, its unreal

Cool. There isn’t a single shred of evidence to suggest that CGJ is more valuable of a safety than Maye or Mathieu. Not one.

They chose not to give him a shot at safety, and not to overpay a slot corner.

If they’re gearing up to try and make a run in 2022/2023 and then rebuild, this is the right move.

CGJ is not in his final form yet and he's an agent of chaos that we have HEAVILY relied on the past 2 years

However, this is more than just the player. This is about cap management first and foremost. CGJ's value never tanks if we don't piss him off in contract talks. We can have rational contract talks if our cap isn't fricked up by moves chasing moves chasing moves.

Also, we literally dealt him at his lowest value point and that value cratering is directly related to our inability to offer him a contract. If trading him was inevitable, then we should have done it before the draft when his value would have been much higher.

Or they decided to roll the dice and if he played hardball they’d move on. He played hardball, they moved on.

And we fricked ourselves in the process and traded him to a conference foe who is likely going to be playoff bound.

TM7 has the 5th best passer rating against for ALL. DBs the last three seasons.

quote:

Tyrann Mathieu played 1,127 snaps last season 555 of those came in the box, 308 at Free Safety, 241 in the slot, and 23 at Corner.

CJGJ has played 5% of his snaps at safety for a reason. To the eagles ya say, “good luck”

Why trade for draft picks at all? Why not an actual real life NFL player? Give me that guy for this guy.

Were they really that hard up on getting to 53?

This is bs. If you think the defense is going to be elite this year, you’re in for a shock. The secondary, with lesser talent at safety and now at slot corner, is going to get torched. Loomis needs to be replaced, he has gotten this team in positions that force them to give away or let walk talented players on multiple occasions. And not at least getting something worthwhile in draft compensation for CGJ is unforgivable. Dennis Allen’s career as head coach of this team is going to be short lived. This board will be calling for his head by year two.

the last three seasons.

What about last year?

Last 3 seasons becomes less relevant when it's clear he's a declining player.

I know he had a better coverage grade than CGJ but wasn't that much better overall.

He's a better prospect than that but it is being overblown.
