Butler couldn't be part of tonight's trade. As a restricted free agent, he isn't under contract.

Only players under contract can be traded.

Maybe the Patriots do the Saints a favor in a few weeks after Butler signs his deal

When's the deadline? I thought it was closer to May or something.

And the team that holds the player's rights has 5 days to make the decision, so it's all taken care of before the draft starts.

Would have rather gotten 18th than fricking 32, it's basically a glorified 2nd round pick.

Well one thing can't be argued is that the pic is the 32nd pick of the draft. Or perhaps you could look at it and say we have two picks in the top 32.

It is clear that this pick was better than Cooks staying on the team to the staff and perhaps some on the team.

Gotcha. Intentional and makes sense.

Optimism in me says maybe they wanted to go ahead and get Cooks dealt with a Butler deal to be determined later on.

Realistically, Butler will be a Patriot.

Very well could be our 3rd for butler and 4th.

Cooks, 3rd, and 4th for butler, 1st, 3rd, and 4th

Where are y'all getting the info that the 18th pick was ever on the table?

It's not about losing Cooks at all, we knew he was going. We just didn't get equal value whatsoever. The 32nd pick for a 23 yr old 1000 yard receiver? Kidding me?

New England seems to have won this trade, unless someone falls to us at 32. The team better find a true replacement for Cooks, because Ginn's career says that he will leave a lot on the table.

I'm actually more surprised that some of the fanbase turned on the dude just because he wanted to catch the ball. In the era I grew up watching, every single one of the top 5 WRs in the league did that on the field, and in the press. Rice, Irving, Sharpe, Rison, Carter...I can't think of one that didn't. The generation after those guys were even more boisterous than they were (Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, Keyshawn Johnson, Chad Johnson).

It was likely the best offer still on the table

That and/or how bad they aparently wanted to see him go. Some how the Saints could have worked a better deal some where else.

Exactly. I wonder what the cut-off is for having a legit first round pick? 25?

If that was the best offer then just keep him and tell him to shut the frick up

This board got out of hand with cooks value due to some reports. It's a good draft to have picks in and y'all have some ammo now

This.

I'm not overly thrilled, but it's probably pretty fair value for what we actually could get for Cooks, not just what we think we deserve.

Everyone is going on about the Philly or Titans pick...seems obvious that wasn't available straight up, so that just further shows he was never worth as much as Saints Talk thought he was IMO.

I'm 99% certain that the compensation only needs to be a first round pick, not specifically the first round pick that belongs to that team. If we sign Butler, we would send #32 back to the Pats. I've tweeted Jason @ overthecap to verify. Will post update.

I wouldn't be a huge fan of doing that, though. If we want to contend for a SB, I think we need to hit on draft picks. This class is loaded at CB so there will be good ones at 32 and 42. The big problem with the draft is that there will be a decent dropoff at DE by that point, so we've got a lot of pressure on us to draft one at 11.

The REAL question is do we get a compensatory pick for this?

So Cooks gets all pissy bc he doesn't get targeted in one game , and the result is to trade him? Was there something else? I don't get it?

We had pressure to draft a DE at 11 regardless. I wouldn't be surprised to see us draft 2 CBs in the first 3 rounds.

Cooks' value wasn't close to what it was believed to be here and clearly we weren't offered 18 straight up for Cooks.

I agree. Only way I would want Butler now is if we kept that extra first rounder.
